After two consecutive years of rain for the Airline Strategy Awards, Britain’s current heat wave finally delivered a long, warm, English summer evening to let guests enjoy the salubrious setting of Lincoln’s Inn with pre-dinner drinks on the terrace.
This was the twelfth time that Flightglobal’s Airline Business magazine, in conjunction with executive search firm Spencer Stuart, had hosted the annual event in the venue’s Great Hall.
Among the 250 guests were a number of well-known airline chief executives – some of whom were picking up awards. These included Carolyn McCall, CEO of EasyJet and the first female airline chief to be recognised by the awards. In another first for the event, picking up the prize for Regional Leadership was Tewolde GebreMariam of Ethiopian Airlines, who along with Kenya Airways chief executive Titus Naikuni, were the first CEOs from African airlines ever to win Airline Strategy Awards. Turkish Airlines Temel Kotil was in attendance to pick up the Marketing Award
The event generated a lot of noise on social media, with guests “live-tweeting” the winners’ names using the #ABStrats hashtag. The awards even got a mention from pop star Danni Minogue, who tweeted about fellow Australian James Hogan being awarded the chief executive prize in recognition of his leadership at Etihad.
