Newts have been causing a bit of a stir in Samlesbury, where aerospace giant BAE Systems are about to begin work on a £100 million business park which will include the development of four office blocks.

The amphibious creatures inhabit a breeding pond on the south side of the site.

BAE faces a fine of £5,000 fine for every newt that is killed in the development. According to a local newtspaper (fnar!) the newt is a protected species because of the threat to its habitat posed by new building developments which have seen the erosion of the wetland and ponds where they traditionally breed.
