VIDEO: Revolutionary Fanwing UAV flies!

| | Comments (4) | TrackBacks (0) |

This video shows the Fanwing unmanned air vehicle flying on the practice day at the ParcAberporth Unmanned Systems 2008 event. Fanwing uses a bladed rotor turning on a horizontal axis that acts like a thick, high-lift wing, giving it a short take-off capability. There is also a vertical take-off version being developed. Fanwing was on static display at the Farnborough International Air Show but did not fly.

Amazing what you can do at low Reynolds numbers. I don't know how much that could be scaled up, however.

Best of luck to them!

Sir,
Are there some new planes coming out ?

What do you think of a bi-plane with two rudders, one on each side of the wings ?

An idea like many,

Best wishes, William Davies.

Hi,

Wondering if you are planning on producing plans of the fanwing or if there is some licencing fee or whatever for radio control models such as the unit you flew at Aberporth?

I would be interested knowing more about "engine out" or "dead stick" landing scenarios.

sincerely, Wesley

How does it perform in the rain ? Does the fan draw in a lot of water ? This would make the craft heavier and would slow the fan.
