Eddies - Flight's first blog

| | Comments () | TrackBacks (0)

I have found a little gem in our archive. The column is entitled Eddies within which the journalists gathered various observations.

The Eddy that amused me on this page is about an overly-enthusiatic student who wouldn't come down from flight and crept to a higher and higher altitude. He was in danger of being shot down!

VIDEO: A380 aircraft parts in transit through village

Max Kingsley Jones, Flight International's deputy editor, took this footage of Airbus A380 parts as they were moved to Toulouse last week.

This video shows the ridiculousness of carrying large and very expensive parts through a small village.

On the Flight blog we are always appreciative of a good time-lapse video so as its Friday enjoy this 3 minute film (with the typical electro-beats included as standard) of the first Northwest Airlines 747-400 adopting the Delta livery scheme:

Tipsy Nipper in a spin

| | Comments () | TrackBacks (0)

A pilot friend who flies a Jodel in his spare time showed me this footage of a Tipsy Nipper light aircraft performing a spin that went wrong.

The pilot of the Tipsy Nipper, known as Youtube user goncstube, planned to perform a normal erect spin to the right, "but", he says: "for various unintentional reasons the spin went flat, up until that point I had never flat spun an aircraft.

"I eventualy mananged to get the aircraft into a normal erect spin from which I was able to recover."

"After coming to rest inverted I waited 20mins for the rescue services to come and right the aircraft so I was able to exit via the outward opening canopy.

"The aircraft rotated 26 times total, I was extremely dissorientated after the recovery to straight and level flight, and was unable to read the instruments."

It seems to be a pretty dangerous stunt and he's lucky to get out alive.

Do you have a similar experience to share?

How easy is it for a spin to go wrong?

The sleeper jet

A 1976 Boeing 747-200 -- one of 393 built by the company until 1991 -- is standing at Stockholm-Arlanda airport but its usual airliner-style decor has been stripped out.

The upper deck is now a conference room, and the flight deck is a wedding suite which comes with a private bathroom and panoramic views of takeoffs and landings.

Jumbo-Hostel.gifYou can stay at the Jumbo Hostel in a basic room with sleeping space for three adults for €110 ($150) per night.

Or you can book the top deck, complete with the flight deck suite, which comes with a private bathroom and panoramic views of takeoffs and landings for around €500 ($700).

We spotted this amusing video of a Japanese Waterpack. The poor chap doesn't travel very far but gets catapulted across a lake which looks like fun.

Air India sack "overweight" air hostesses

| | Comments () | TrackBacks (0)
For those already struggling with new year resolutions about shedding the Christmas bulge, spare a thought today for nine Air India hostesses, who have been sacked following Air India's inability to offer them ground duty jobs after already taking them off hostess duty for being too fat.

Air India state that the reasoning behind the action is the safety of the passengers:

[From BBC report] Being grossly overweight does have a bearing on reflexes and can impair agility required to perform the emergency functions".

A more serious reason could be the highly competitive nature of Indian air travel, where private airlines employ attractive young flight crew meaning that larger airlines such as Air India have had to be more strict in who they employ.

Next they will be rejecting people for having bad teeth and acne. Oh they are already doing that!!

Here's a video of Mariusz Pudzianowski pulling a Lockheed Martin C-130 as part of the World's Strongest Man 2008 competition. It's fair to say that he won the title.
