VIDEO: Celebrity pilot John Travolta saves the day in his supply-laden Boeing 707

Celebrity pilot John Travolta flew his own Boeing 707 to the Haiti capital, Port-au-Prince,  recently blighted by a devastating earthquake which has left as many as 200,000 people dead and some 2 million in need of aid.

He delivered including six tonnes of military rations and medical supplies.

According to the Guardian, there is a backlog of at least 800 aircraft awaiting permission to land at the overloaded airport, which can handle just 130 flights daily.

Travolta used his aircraft to help out during the the floods following Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

Ummm, not sure about your headline here. Saves the day? He flew an old airliner with a [comparatively] limited payload and got a whole heap of publicity for it. Personally, I would have preferred dedicated freighters bringing in supplies.

Well the airport isn’t operating to capacity, so I’ll say a 707 is better that nothing.

    Come on John,

You fly an almost antique aircraft which has not be retro-fitted with fuel efficient engines to a third world country to carry relief supplies. Does anyone smell publicity stunt here? How about all the carbon you polluted the air with on your way down? Instead of flying your own plane down and making a personal appearance, why didn’t you just charter a cargo plane, fill it with supplies and send it anonymously? That way you help without helping yourself.

    john travolta,

for as long as your aircraft is airworthy you can do as you like. delivering aid yourself is highly commendable. i admire your courage. do not read negative feedback/s from readers like me. it is your money, it is your voluntary effiort and it is your treasured aircraft.

FAA shows it’s an SIC-only type. What an egomaniacal clown.

We could really use John Travolta flying in some beans, rice, sugar, flour, and cooking oil to 24 Islanders starving in Kanton Island in Kiribati. It is an hour and a half south of Hawaii. The US Coastguard is being blocked making the food drop by the Kiribati government saying Kanton Island hasn’t requested food in an emergency case. The side band radio people can hear the Kanton Island policeman on the radio begging for food of any kind. The 10 children’s legs are bowed and their teeth a mess from malnutrition. There is an airstrip on the atoll island. Please help! See this story for more details please.

As far as I am concerned, to each is own and we are all allowed to make our own decisions. If John wants to provide aid, then provide ad. If we owned our own jet, we may or may not do the same – but I am sure most of us don’t.
