The greatest sporting event in the world began with a thrilling flypast from one of the icons of British aviation, the Red Arrows.
A packed stadium of 62,000 people and an estimated global audience of one billion were thrilled by the team's performance, which proved to be a fitting finale after they had flown over each of the other UK capital cities during the day.
