credit Lockheed Martin / caption: when one Orion crew exploration vehicle is simply not enough
Lockheed Martin is proposing alternate uses for the Orion crew exploration vehicle (CEV) it is developing for NASA's Constellation programme
The image above shows two Orion's docked together for a near Earth object mission. Other alternate uses were given in a presentation by Lockheed's Brian Duffy at the AIAA 45th Joint Propulsion Conference in Denver, Colorado last week
Just as soon as Hyperbola gets the presentation it will post more

Oh man, that's awesome! My first thoughts were of lack cramped quarters, but I suppose a NEO mission would maybe only have a crew of three and the second Orion would be for supplies and living volume? Looking forward to the full presentation.

Me think those two Orion's will be unmanned. Didn't you know? The ultimate goal of the Obama administration is to get those darned astronauts out of space. Robots will do the job cheaper.

Where's the mass shielding to protect the astronauts from galactic radiation?

Excuse me, but this was maybe "re-proposed" by Lockheed Martin. The use of dual Orion modules for visiting NEOs and other beyond-LEO destinations was originally put forward by Buzz Aldrin going back six months or more. I have to say though that it is good to see Lockheed is finally catching up with other peoples good idea.
