After a ten year wait, the Russian Kondor-1 reconnaissance satellite was finally launched into orbit via its its 1658 GMT launch on 27 June on a Strela 1 launch vehicle. The flight took place from the Baikonur Cosmodrome near Tyuratam, Kazakhstan. Accoridng to the Ascend SpaceTrak database, it was originally planned to be launched in 2003.
This is thought to be the first Kondor radar satellite (to be confirmed once the radar antenna has been deployed). Later versions are also expected to include optical reconnaissance satellites. The radar version of the spacecraft is reported to have a resolution of of 1-20m over a 10 x 200km survelliance area.
