Beantown battle puts Boston in the hub

boston-logan-ma-041m.jpgSuddenly, Boston is back on airline route maps. The city, also known as the Hub of the Universe, among other modest titles, has never been humble, but no one airline has ever been able to dominate service to and from its Logan International Airport. Its traffic, long split between American and US Airways, now has a third major player, JetBlue, with the largest market share, 17%. American has 15%, Airways 15%, and the rest is divided up among others, according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics. So we were interested when a flurry of announcements put Logan way up on the list of happening places.

For instance, JetBlue said that in May, it will restore its service to San Francisco with a single flight. It will also add two flights to Washington Dulles and New York JFK and one flight each to Buffalo, N.Y., Charlotte, N.C., Chicago, Long Beach,

Calif., Pittsburgh and Raleigh-Durham, N.C. JetBlue will also restore service to Bermuda, make its seasonal San Juan, Puerto Rico, year round, and start one weekly flight to St. Maarten.

At about the same time, American announced it too will resume a Logan transcontinental run, with the non-stop flights to San Diego that it abandoned earlier this year. American will also resume seasonal service to Paris and add a flight on its routes to Dallas-Fort Worth, London, Los Angeles and St. Louis. The US flights start April 7, but the transatlantic routes start May 1. And then tiny Spirit said it too liked Bean Town and will begin flights between Logan and Atlantic City, NJ, starting in May.

And the airline to start the flurry of announcements for increased BOS service was Virgin America last week, who’s announcement probably spurred much of the announcements out of JetBlue and American.
