Flightglobal's Air Show Guide iPhone app

We've just launched an iPhone and iPad app for visitors attending this year's Dubai Air Show.

It's designed to help visitors get around the show, keep up to date with announcements and provide helpful show and local information.

The app is free and available from the iTunes store.

There are some really nice features in the app:

Hall maps: The maps of the different halls allow users to tap on individual stands and chalets to bring up exhibitor details

Static map: The static map will be updated as soon as the final static plan is released (likely to be a couple of days before the show starts). Tapping on individual aircraft will bring up details specific to that aircraft.

Exhibitors listings: Fully searchable and features tap thrus to the exhibitor's chalet or stand position on the maps

Flying times: We'll update the daily flying display schedule each morning of the show as we receive the final details

Show news: All the latest stories will be piped into the app in full text with photos (where present)

Local and show information: There's a bunch of useful information relating to taxis, show opening times, restaurant suggestions and nightlife

The app works offline (once you've installed it for the first time), but obviously to receive the latest news and flying display times, you'll need to restart the app when connected to wifi or 3G (with data roaming switched on).

@BoeingAirplanes crowned Paris Power Tweeter 2011 #pas11

BoeingAirplanes has been crowned the Paris Power Tweeter for this year's Paris Air Show.

The award recognises the most active, influential and engaged social media proponent from the show's exhibitors.

BoeingAirplanes posted a total of 94 tweets during the first four days of the show (19-22 June) and received an impressive 469 retweets of their Paris announcements.

It helped swell their followers by over 650 up to a total of 28,745.

The Award was calculated by measuring the number of tweets from each twitter account using the Paris Air Show hashtag #pas11, the number of retweets by the respective followers, and the growth in those following the account.

Twitter powerhouse and Flightglobal journalist Jon Ostrower said of Boeing's achievement: "The award is recognition for Boeing's commitment to bringing together those who bring aerospace to life and those who follow with passion and enthusiasm around the world."

Notable mentions in the Power Tweeter award go to Airbus - generated the highest percentage of retweets per tweet, GEAviation - who clocked up an impressive 177 #pas11 tweets, and CFM_Engines, who pulled in a massive 4,284 new followers mainly through their innovative sponsorship of the #pas11 hashtag.

This year's Paris Air Show has seen an unprecedented amount of social media activity, with many exhibitors embracing their customers through the new medium.

The Paris Air Show is nearly here and to coincide with the fun that is to be had at the show, Flightglobal has devised a "create-your-own-unique-Paris-air-show" web page.

Using the MyParis service, you can elect to see Paris your way by deciding on the content that you want to see, filling it with your favourite content. Configure the industry sector that most appeals to you or receive it all. Sign up now.

Read RunwayGirl's blog post where she gives US Airways a ticking off for a number of crimes to passengers including poor IFE and inadequate seat pitch, for which "all the mood lighting in the world isn't going to make any better".

At 5ft 11", she admitted in an earlier post that she's tall for a woman, and you can see how uncomfortable she was from the picture she posted.

She goes on to say that the airline is "asking for trouble, especially now that travellers are Facebooking and Tweeting every little thing they do/see/feel".

See a great image from BAE Systems of the 100th Eurofighter Typhoon which is the 35th to be delivered to the RAF and compare our coverage of the Grimsvotn ash cloud to last year's eruption of Eyjafjallajökull to see what the industry has learned.

Have a browse in the Flightglobal Shop and let us know if there's anything that we currently don't stock that you'd like to see.

In the meantime, you can purchase the first Flightglobal forecast report, the Fleet Forecast, which provides an independent view of fleet development within the world's main regions to seat category and model level.

There's also the Flightglobal Image Store where you can buy a huge range of images as prints, including the newest gallery of iconic front cover images as well as cutaway posters.

Week on the web

Several members of the Flightglobal team flocked to cover the AUVSI show in Denver, Colorado and John Croft added some great behind the scenes images of the halls being set up before the show began.

A Spitfire and a Hurricane provided the soundtrack to an actor reading the famous speech by the then prime minister Winston Churchill on 20 August to commemorate 70 years since the Battle of Britain and the image of the two iconic aircraft graced the Image of the Day blog.

FlightBlogger charts the flight testing progress of ZA002, the second Boeing 787 test aircraft, as it flies up the coast of Canada at 36,000ft bound for the North Pole to spend a day evaluating a myriad of navigation systems. It flew for more than 14 hours, breaking the record held by ZA004 at 12h 30min.

See a fun "rugby" themed safety video by Air New Zealand which might just get passengers (or members of the team) to pay attention to the sometimes dry instructions before a flight.
Mary Kirby on Runway Girl writes about an alternative seating arrangement: "Thromby Air, a faux carrier that charges passengers by the pound (of flesh) has an innovative new idea for high-density seating. Forget about Ryanair's O'Leary and his stand-up seating proposal. Why not try Tetris instead?" she writes, and adds an interesting illustration to the post.

The Farnborough Show in numbers (FARN10)

Flightglobal prides itself on providing the most comprehensive aviation coverage in the world, and as another Farnborough Air Show becomes a distant memory, I hope you don't mind us sharing with you what the biggest air show of the year meant for us.

We are happy to report that the Farnborough Air Show was another roaring success, with
Flightglobal breaking through the two million page view barrier for the first time in a single week, with over half a million visits and over 330,000 unique visitors coming to Flightglobal during the week of the show. This is a rise of 53% versus the previous Farnborough in 2008 and 12% rise on Paris 2009.

After pioneering the integrated media coverage approach at last year's Paris Air Show a year ago, we once again opened our doors to interested visitors while producing an array of content live at the show for Flightglobal, Flight International magazine, Flight Daily News and our new interactive magazine iFlight.

Some of the other highlights included:

Our brand new Farnborough design led show page had nearly 250,000 page views and nearly 150,000 visits

The flying display live streaming (in association with FLIR systems) had 71,000 page views and 45,000 visits

Our 3 issues of exclusive iFlight magazines have been opened over 14,000 times

We produced over 400 Farnborough articles during the week which had nearly 350,000 page views on their own, over 35 videos produced at the show, 121 blog posts from our range of bloggers and countless tweets from our Twitterati.

Our content also went beyond the aviation market with two of our videos making the daily most viewed chart on YouTube, being one of the first to show the Boeing 787 arrive and also provide a unique infrared look at the F-22 flying display, being viewed over 43,000 and 51,000 respectively.

All we can say now is roll on Paris 2011!

Farnborough show coverage - bringing magazine design to the web

One of my biggest gripes about the web is that all too often style gets sacrificed in favour of utility.

"Usability" and "Search Engine Optimisation" always seem to out muscle "coolness" and "panache" in the battle for on-page real estate.

With our Farnborough Air Show 2010 coverage, we're attempting to buck the trend.

Our Head of Design and Production, Alexis Rendell, came up with some awesome visuals trying to put magazine design standards onto our web pages, complete with a "front cover" style page given over completely to beautiful images from this year's biggest air show.

We've got nine pages lovingly (and painstakingly) crafted from 1s and 0s, showcasing everything Farnborough has to offer. The aim is to provide an online air show experience like never before:

Front Cover
News
Video
Blogs
Twitter
Images
iFlight
Static
Flying

I'll talk through a couple, but then leave you to explore the rest in your own time:

The Front Cover

As mentioned above, the design brief was to bring a magazine-esque front cover to the show pages. We've achieved this with a page dedicated to the best images each day at the show generates.

We're pouring over the 1000s of images that come into us each morning for the next fortnight, and cherry-picking six of very best, most impactful shots to front the show each day.

It's an indulgent use of a webpage, but we were so wowed by the original designs that we had to make it happen.

News

On the news page we've reverted to a stylish black background with white text. Fans of Tweetdeck will get our reference point for that.

Listening to feedback, we've included sector-specific news headlines on the news page this year - Air Transport, Biz Av, Defence and Aerospace.

We also know that you love your pictures so there's a thumbnail with each lead story to liven up the page.

iFlight

This is a much-improved way to showcase our deliciously cool iFlight Interactive Magazine.

If you've not seen an issue yet, then make sure you get on the end of the first Farnborough issue (19th July). They really are a bridge between magazine and website, brimming with images, videos, interviews and interactive graphics.

This page currently shows some greyed-out front covers, but those will be replaced with the actually front covers as we publish them. However you can get an idea of what's coming from the teaser text. If you want an email reminder you can sign up here ...

The other pages are equally glorious but best experienced first hand.

Like many aerospace companies, we like to use the major air shows as a launch page for new products and services.

These pages will form a template for future show coverage on Flightglobal, but we welcome any feedback below if you'd like to see any changes implemented.

Week on the Web

See images of the Afriqiyah Airways Airbus A330-200 that had accumulated just 1,600 flight hours before the accident in Tripoli.

AirSpace users were quick of the mark to upload images from around the web showing the wreckage and began discussing the developments to the story as it unfolded.

RunwayGirl posted an article about the first iPad IFE system to be formally launched at the Hamburg Interiors show this week. And says "an unidentified international carrier" would be using it on flights from July.

RunwayGirl says: "The system leverages the power, flexibility and quality of the Apple iPad, the most advanced consumer device ever produced".

View an animation of the Turkish Airlines Boeing 737-800 that crashed on approach to Amsterdam.

It shows the aircraft's autothrottle reduced the thrust to idle early in the approach, after receiving incorrect altitude information from a faulty left-hand radio altimeter, causing the jet to lose airspeed.

There's a superb black and white image on AirSpace of the Eurofighter Typhoon taken by user andychittock.

Week on the Web

The Flightglobal team decamped to Geneva's Palexpo to report on EBACE for the iFDN, Flight Evening News and the summing up in the show report in this issue.

The team worked tirelessly to bring you news, blog posts from FlightBlogger, Learmount and As the Cro(ft) Flies, images, and videos of interviews with the movers and shakers of the business aviation community.

You can find all this throughout the pages of the interactive magazine and our dedicated EBACE 2010 page. And see what was being said on twitter by following the show's hashtag.

Eurocopter joined forces with automotive and design powerhouse Mercedes Benz to launch an interior for its entrepreneurial EC145 customers who work hard and play hard.

And then there's the Design Q and BAE Systems partnership that unveiled striking interior concepts including one where the cargo door opens to reveal an air deck described as the "ultimate living space".

Roll up, roll up - get your free interactive Flight Daily News from the Singapore Air Show #sin10

Hot off the (virtual) press today is our first ever Interactive Flight Daily News magazine.

This is a digital-only magazine produced by the Flightglobal team out at this week's Singapore Air Show.

A couple Q&A bits for you:

What's Flight Daily News?

Flight Daily News is a daily magazine produced live at major air shows and industry events throughout the year. It's handed out free to show visitors as they arrive at the event and the idea is to be as up to date with current happenings as possible.

To that aim we sometimes produce Flight Evening News - tagline "today's news today" - which is handed out to show visitors as they leave at the end of the day.

What's a digital magazine?

In its basic form a digital magazine can be just an online pdf version of a physical paper mag. However the digital environment does open up the possibilities of enriching the reader's experience through interactive elements on page.

For example, videos, moving graphics, active hyperlinks, all singing all dancing adverts, that kind of stuff ...

What's in today's copy of iFDN?

Now this is the cool part. Our Interactive Flight Daily News is a purpose-built digital publication - not just a flat online pdf.

We've put the interactive potential at the heart of this new format and as such got tonnes of videos and images to accompany Day 1's top stories.

These include:

• A330F - Airbus give us a first look inside the new freighter
• 787 update - Boeing's Randy Tinseth gives an encouraging message following early progress from the 787 flight test programme
• Highlights of the displays - including the A-10 "warthog" and the flaming F-111
• But there's loads more - 24 pages worth to be exact.

How does it differ from the show coverage on Flightglobal's Singapore page?

Well, the important thing to remember is that they're doing difference things but with the same content - in the same way that websites and magazines do different things.

Flightglobal's Singapore webpage is a terrific hub for everything that's occurring at the show and all the content, stories and multimedia produced by our team out there.

iFDN is topical and provides a snap shot of Day 1 at the show, and from that you can get a feeling for the tone and atmosphere of the business environment. It also offers a richer experience for the reader in a way that the website cannot.

www.flightglobal.com/singapore webpage

A double page spread from iFDN

The design interface on Flightglobal must by its very purpose accommodate other types of content and usage. The design of iFDN is much more impactful as it can truly focus on doing the one job it has been created for.

And let's not forget it's free! A quality magazine full of stories and videos that professional journalists and designers have worked through the night to deliver ... for FREE!

You lucky people!

Week on the Web (29 December - 5 January)

While most of us have been eating cold turkey every day for the last week, the aviation world did not stop.

Here at Flightglobal, we put together some lists including Flightglobal's list of the year's first flights, roll-outs and anniversaries, how we covered the air shows around the globe and of course the usual top tens from the stories, the pictures and the videos that had you clicking furiously to see what the big noise was about.

You've still got time to enter the Webbies 09 Flightglobal's Aviation Web Awards. You can nominate your own favourite sites, as well, in the eight aviation-related categories including two new categories celebrating community and enthusiast websites and effective use of social media. The closing date for entries and nominations is 10th January so get cracking.

See how Flight saw the world in its last issue of its first year. In the 18th December 1909 issue, a reader, Harold Kelk wrote to the editor questioning the origination of the word "aviation", saying: M. Jules Verne used [the word] in his book "The Clipper of the Clouds ".

"I think 'aviation' a much pleasanter word to use than 'volitation', and its exact meaning quite near enough to the mark to justify its use," he says.
