The awards, now in their fourth year, celebrate and acknowledge individuals, teams and innovations at work in the aviation and aerospace industries. If you would like to reward those aviation professionals or teams that really stand out, this is your opportunity to cast your vote!

Go to our nominations page now and tell us who you think deserves to be rewarded in the following categories:

Leader of the Year: Awarded to the aviation or aerospace industry executive who has displayed exemplary business vision and inspirational leadership throughout the year, whether by steering a challenging project to fruition or by bringing together an exceptional team.

Aviator of the Year: This award will be presented to the individual or team that has done the most to advance the cause of safety and operational best practice in the field of aviation over the previous 12 months. Nominations may be for individuals, flight crews or support teams.

Innovator of the Year: This award recognises people, teams or companies that have demonstrated new technologies, products or even ways of doing business that have been developed or have come to market in the past year.

Lifetime Achievement Award: The person who has made an outstanding contribution to the industry or to the development of aviation.

In last year's awards, which culminated in a ceremony at the 2011 Dubai Airshow, Emirates president Tim Clark, BEA AF447 investigation team, Sikorsky's X2 pilot Kevin Bredenbeck and airline pioneer Burt Rutan were named the respective Leader, Innovator, Aviator and Lifetime Achievement award-winners.

The deadline for nominations to recognise the great and good in aviation is 30 March 2012. A shortlist of finalists will result from this round of voting, and you will then have the chance to cast your vote again to decide the winners.

FlightBlogger Jon Ostrower continued his unrivalled Boeing Commercial Airplanes coverage, focusing this week on the deal with unions to ensure the 737 Max is made in Seattle.

Aviation safety is the subject of entries from John Croft on his general aviation blog As the Cro(ft) Flies, and from David Learmount on his eponymous blog.

Croft praises the robustness of the Air Tractor after a crash in which the pilot survived and was quoted as saying: "If I'd had been flying anything else, I'd have been dead."

Learmount bemoans the lack of risk awareness among sections of the helicopter community in a blog accompanied by real-time video of a low-altitude accident on an Auckland construction site, in which the chopper was torn in two but from which the pilot walked away, albeit shakily.

We're currently experiencing severe technical issues with the Flightglobal.com domain, potentially caused by a sustained and large-scale attack on our web service.

Our experienced security and infrastructure teams have the situation under control and are dealing with the issues as they arise but for the time being visitors to the site may experience intermittent time outs and site downs.

Flightglobal wins Digital Service of the Year Award

Flightglobal walked away with two awards at last night's Digital Publishing Awards organised by the PPA and Data Publishers Association.

We won Digital Service of the Year for flightglobal.com and also the Flightglobal Pro sales team won the award for Paid Content Sales Team of the Year.

Gaining recognition in the wider world of our rapidly developing and successful online services is extremely gratifying.

This follows our success at the Association of Online Publisher Awards earlier this year where Flightglobal was named Business Website of the Year 2010.

It's great to gain this recognition from the media and publishing industries and it's a reflection of the fact that everyone here has worked extremely hard this year to keep moving our business forward and sustain such high levels of quality and professionalism.

Atlas - a new real-time flight tracking from Flightglobal

We're thrilled to reveal a new section of Flightglobal today that we've been working on for some time.

Atlas is a new realtime aircraft tracking service overlaying aircraft/airline flight data onto Google Maps to provided a flight tracking service.

Okay - here's the caveat: the product is still in beta having just gone live so please be patient if any glitches rear their ugly heads.

Over the coming weeks and months, we'll be working hard to introduce new features and enhancements, but in the meantime if you have any comments or suggestions we'd love to hear them ...

Our intention is to extend Atlas' coverage over as much of the world as possible, as well as introduce loads of additional cool features, including membership with enhanced functionality and content.

Q. Why are the aircraft shown with a 5 minute delay?

A. To enable us to pick up the flights from multiple sources and display them correctly, the display is delayed for 5 minutes. If we reduced the delay by anymore than 5 minutes you would notice the aircraft "jumping" around a bit as Atlas updated the map with the latest positions. By incorporating a short delay Atlas can validate the aircraft positions and plot their path smoothly.

Q. Where does the aircraft information come from?

A. Atlas collates aircraft positional information received from a network of contributors who have set up SBS boxes (see below). The SBS boxes receive line-of-sight altitude and identification signals from aircraft equipped with ADS-B transponders together with GPS data.

Q. What is an SBS box?

A. An SBS box is a portable low-cost Mode-S/ADS-B receiving Station designed for training and the aviation enthusiast. More information on SBS boxes ...

Q. Can I join the network of Atlas contributors?

A. We'd love you to! But you'll have to wait just a little while until Atlas has come out of beta. First we've just to make sure everything is working smoothly, then we'll post details of how you sign up and the contributor benefits for Atlas members!

Q. Do you plan to introduce new features to Atlas?

A. Yes yes and yes! We've got loads of plans for Atlas, in addition to increasing the global coverage. But we'd also like you ideas. See Feedback below.

Q. Will you be increasing the global coverage?

A. Once we've approved the beta version of Atlas we'll be inviting people with SBS boxes to join the Atlas members network. So as new SBS boxes come online, then the coverage will grow rapidly.

Q. What version of Adobe Flash do you recommend for using Atlas?

A. We recommend version 10.1.

New Flightglobal iPhone app available from iTunes store

With the whole world seemingly going iPhone app crazy (over 1 billion app downloads to date and counting) we thought we'd get in on the act and build our own one.

The Flightglobal app is now live and available on the iTunes app store (search for "Flightglobal" in the App store on iTunes).

It features several different tabs allowing users to access various types of content from their iPhones.

These include:

the latest and breaking news stories from anywhere in the world
the latest aviation trends from Flightglobal's blogs
the latest video highlights, including exclusive interviews, event reports and aerial displays
follow our journalists on the road in our Twitter section
the newest and latest aviation and airline jobs from all over the world
the option to forward links of your favourite items to your friends via email

Obviously this is the first Flightglobal mobile app that we've developed, but we do intend to produce more applications focused on specific activities and topics within the aviation and aerospace communities.

Five days at Flightglobal - the verdict

So Mike, I've babysat your editorship of Flightglobal for a week, writes Airline Business editor Mark Pilling. Thanks for the experience. No, seriously, I enjoyed it.

I would have liked to drive the news side a little harder, but like most of us these days I don't get to down tools on my day job (s) and concentrate on just the one thing.

I got lucky because the news did flow, as I noted in earlier blogs. That will mean traffic during the week should easily have gone past 1.4 million visits and could have nudged 1.5 million. Now that's not far off the Flightglobal record.

I won't claim any credit for that. It's simply a function of how broad and deep Flightglobal is becoming in terms of content. It's frankly big.

I've learnt a lot: how your team works (hard) and how the IT development team works (still a bit of a mystery I've got to admit). I've also seen a few of the cracks we need to fill to improve the site - but I am sure you are well, well aware of them already.

One of the biggest things for me about Flightglobal is understanding where to focus our efforts. Mike has got a pretty good idea I know, but my week at Flightglobal has shown me how tough that is to get a handle on.

Mike I'm glad it's your job rather than mine to get to grips with.

But after a week keeping your chair warm you know more than ever that I'll be keeping the Flightglobal faith.
