Loyalty payment scheme for AirSpace photo contributors

If you're a regular contributor to the photo galleries on AirSpace you may know that we sometimes feature your photos in issues of Flight International magazine.

For example each week there's an Image of the Week chosen by the magazine's editors from the best of the uploads to the AirSpace members' galleries.

In recognition of our regular contributors we're introducing a loyalty payment scheme to say thanks for helping to make our website and magazines quality products.

So from now on for every fifth image of yours that we publish, we'll send you £50.

When we select an image for an issue of Flight International, we'll send you an email to let you know that one of your images has been used, and when you get to five images published we'll send you the money (and then another £50 for every subsequent five images used).

He posted video that "shows the technology in action... in rather dramatic fashion".

On defence blog The DEW Line, Stephen Trimble noted Northrop's next-generation airliner concept, a response to a NASA request. "It's the first airliner optimised for radar cross section!" wrote Trimble.

"That's one way for airlines to get around slot restrictions at LHR."

Week on the web

We launched the annual Webbies to find the best aviation resources on the internet. The awards, in their fourth year, include several new categories, such as best mobile app. The deadline for entries is 13 January.

See the new categories and enter now

FlightBlogger Jon Ostrower continued his unrivalled Boeing Commercial Airplanes coverage, focusing this week on the deal with unions to ensure the 737 Max is made in Seattle.

Aviation safety is the subject of entries from John Croft on his general aviation blog As the Cro(ft) Flies, and from David Learmount on his eponymous blog.

Croft praises the robustness of the Air Tractor after a crash in which the pilot survived and was quoted as saying: "If I'd had been flying anything else, I'd have been dead."

Learmount bemoans the lack of risk awareness among sections of the helicopter community in a blog accompanied by real-time video of a low-altitude accident on an Auckland construction site, in which the chopper was torn in two but from which the pilot walked away, albeit shakily.

In our back-issue archive, Jon "FlightBlogger" Ostrower dug up a 1989 story in which McDonnell Douglas "concedes that, with fuel prices unlikely to rise substantially in the near future, there is 'inadequate motivation' for airlines to gamble on unducted-fan technology".

Asian Skies blogger Greg Waldron sourced from the China Defence Mashup website a photo purportedly of a crashed Chinese UAV.

The Paris Air Show is nearly here and to coincide with the fun that is to be had at the show, Flightglobal has devised a "create-your-own-unique-Paris-air-show" web page.

Using the MyParis service, you can elect to see Paris your way by deciding on the content that you want to see, filling it with your favourite content. Configure the industry sector that most appeals to you or receive it all. Sign up now.

Read RunwayGirl's blog post where she gives US Airways a ticking off for a number of crimes to passengers including poor IFE and inadequate seat pitch, for which "all the mood lighting in the world isn't going to make any better".

At 5ft 11", she admitted in an earlier post that she's tall for a woman, and you can see how uncomfortable she was from the picture she posted.

She goes on to say that the airline is "asking for trouble, especially now that travellers are Facebooking and Tweeting every little thing they do/see/feel".

See a great image from BAE Systems of the 100th Eurofighter Typhoon which is the 35th to be delivered to the RAF and compare our coverage of the Grimsvotn ash cloud to last year's eruption of Eyjafjallajökull to see what the industry has learned.

Have a browse in the Flightglobal Shop and let us know if there's anything that we currently don't stock that you'd like to see.

In the meantime, you can purchase the first Flightglobal forecast report, the Fleet Forecast, which provides an independent view of fleet development within the world's main regions to seat category and model level.

There's also the Flightglobal Image Store where you can buy a huge range of images as prints, including the newest gallery of iconic front cover images as well as cutaway posters.

FlightBlogger Jon Ostrower was in Everett, Seattle, to cover the rollout of the Boeing 747-8I and his flurry of activity can be seen on our dedicated page which gives you background information on the aircraft programme, the story so far, 210 images to pore over, video, Twitter and news as it happened.

Elbit performed joint sorties with the Hermes-family of UAVs highlighting the cost benefits of using a common GCS capable of simultaneously controlling two parallel missions, each managed by a single operator. See a video of the software in action.

Take a look at the 18 February issue 100 years ago in the Flightglobal archive to see what was important in the world of aviation back then.

The front page has two images taken at Brooklands in Surrey; which "give some idea of the gatherings which assemble day by day around the actual flving village. In the upper photograph Tom Sopwith is flying his Howard Wright biplane... In the bottom picture Mr. Low, one of the expert pilots of the Bristol Co., is making one of his fine flights round the aerodrome."

Take a look inside Brit Air's new 100-seat Bombardier CRJ1000 cabin on Runway Girl's blog. You'll see footage of the cockpit, a bigger washroom and includes information about Bombardier's in-flight connectivity and electronic flight bag (EFB) plans.

There's also an informative look at the WTO spat looking at the history of the investigation on subsidies plus the Boeing view, and the Airbus view soon to come.

Take a look at a picture of a great retro aircraft, the Junker JU-52 flying in South African skies uploaded by AirSpace user sonjaG.

"Our artists Giuseppe Picarella and Tim Hall have a packed schedule, travelling to factories around the world to peer inside the most intimate workings of the latest aircraft programmes."

Posters to look out for include Bombardier's CRJ1000, the Northrop Grumman Global Hawk in NATO AGS guise, the Cessna Citation CJ4 and the Grob G120TP.

AirSpace user Airliners_Illustrated has uploaded some great images of airliners including a close up of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner's Rolls Royce Trent 1000.
Read the transcript of questions and answers and get involved by using the Twitter hashtag #safety2010 to continue the dialogue.

Learmount answered a question from user Jeff S about streaming black box data in realtime from an aircraft while it is flying. He wondered whether it would ever happen or could it be "Star Trek fantasy".

Read the live updates as they happened during Airbus' annual press conference during which Sir Richard Branson announced an order of 30 A320neos for Virgin America, the first airline to order the re-engined aircraft complete with sharklet wingtips.
