Flightglobal's Air Show Guide iPhone app

We've just launched an iPhone and iPad app for visitors attending this year's Dubai Air Show.

It's designed to help visitors get around the show, keep up to date with announcements and provide helpful show and local information.

The app is free and available from the iTunes store.

There are some really nice features in the app:

Hall maps: The maps of the different halls allow users to tap on individual stands and chalets to bring up exhibitor details

Static map: The static map will be updated as soon as the final static plan is released (likely to be a couple of days before the show starts). Tapping on individual aircraft will bring up details specific to that aircraft.

Exhibitors listings: Fully searchable and features tap thrus to the exhibitor's chalet or stand position on the maps

Flying times: We'll update the daily flying display schedule each morning of the show as we receive the final details

Show news: All the latest stories will be piped into the app in full text with photos (where present)

Local and show information: There's a bunch of useful information relating to taxis, show opening times, restaurant suggestions and nightlife

The app works offline (once you've installed it for the first time), but obviously to receive the latest news and flying display times, you'll need to restart the app when connected to wifi or 3G (with data roaming switched on).

What to expect from Flightglobal in the year ahead

2010 was a year which saw Flightglobal gear up its mobile offering, grow its strong offering on the Social Web and introduce Pro - a premium service offering and expert level of news and data.

2011 - will be a year building upon those foundations.

Going social

As digital social interaction gains ubiquity across the planet, we'll be plugging all activity into the Social Web.

This means you'll be able to move neatly between your favourite Flightglobal content - news, blogs, images etc ... - and your favourite social services - Twitter, Facebook, Youtube etc ... with greater ease than before.

Going Pro

Flightglobal will continue to launch new professional services this year designed to facilitate professional decision-making within the industry.

These Pro services will be integrated throughout Flightglobal as well as accessible via a personalized dashboard.

Going mobile

The lightning-fast growth of the smart phone and tablet market means that more and more of our million-strong audience want us to develop apps, updates and feeds to stay in touch with the industry while out and about.

We'll be continuing to develop in this space in order to keep pace with demand.

Going all show business

Our industry-leading event coverage has transformed the way people have been staying in touch with air show and exhibition news.

In 2011, we'll be at more shows than ever, with more reporters producing more content, publishing more iFlight magazines and more mobile updates, and producing an unrivalled digital experience for anyone who's serious about aviation ... you get the idea.

Happy New Year.

Michael Targett

New Flightglobal iPhone app upgrade is now live

Flightglobal's iPhone app has just had a major upgrade, and is now available for install via iTunes.

The application has been significantly redesigned and has a whole suite of new features:

Offline mode. The app will download all the latest articles, blogs and images so you can view them when there's no connectivity.

Articles contain full text content (as opposed to just a summary sentence) so there's no need to fire up the browser

There's a cool tiled image gallery with direct tap-thru to the full image. You can then swipe to browse through previous/next images

There are up and down arrows to allow you to page through previous/next articles

There's a new "home page" featuring key content (articles, blogs, images and video)

There's also a customisable MyFlightglobal page where you can choose which news feeds and blogs you want to read, and then store them onto a single page

There's a special news feed, which we'll turn on for major events, such as the Paris Air Show.

We think it's pretty cool - a big improvement - and the best way for iPhone users around the world to stay up-to-date for all aviation and aerospace goings-on.

Time to start feeding back on what you'd like included in the next upgrade (leave comments below) or other stand-alone apps that you'd like to see us produce.
