Week on the web

Russia stands out among the world's biggest military spenders by not having an indigenous medium-altitude unmanned air vehicle. Defence blog The DEW Line carried a video that cleared up the mystery.

The clip shows the fate of Russia's answer to the Predator, the Vega Stork, a demonstrator of which crashed on 18 January 2010.

The Boeing 747-8F non-delivery had FlightBlogger trawling the Flight International archives to locate our August 1991 story on Singapore Airlines' cancellation of 20 Pratt & Whitney PW4460-powered Douglas MD-11 aircraft in favour of Airbus A340-300s, after the former were deemed unable to fly the Singapore-Paris route without a 5t payload restriction.

On Asian Skies, Greg Waldron posted images - sourced from the Japan Security Watch blog - of the Kawasaki XP-1 maritime patrol aircraft conducting flight tests with two Type-91 anti-ship missiles on its inboard missile pylons.

Check out the new heatmapped graphic on the Archive channel page and roll over each of the iconic front covers to see inside that issue. The front covers make an ideal present for aviation enthusiasts, so browse the gallery at the Flightglobal Image Store and buy one in a range of formats, from a print, a jigsaw puzzle, or a mug.

Lockheed Martin can earn a $52.5 million extra pay-day this year on the F-35 program, according to a post on The DEW Line blog.

Author Stephen Trimble suggests this "may seem like chump-change compared to the roughly $11.4 billion in the Fiscal 2011 budget for F-35, but these days a defense contractor will gladly take anything it can get."

He adds that the list also helps clarify what the F-35 joint program office thinks are some of the most important objectives for the struggling program to achieve in 2011.

See Flightglobal's coverage of the volcanic ash cloud from a major volcanic eruption in Iceland that caused travel chaos around the world.

Our dedicated Icelandic ash cloud page kept users up to date with news from our own journalists and from around the web using realtime multimedia publishing platform CoverItLive which spewed out plumes of information from Twitter about the grounding of aircraft, live satellite images from NASA and ESA and the Met Office tracking the travelling ash cloud over European airspace.

Watch David Learmount's video explaining consequences and the impact of this unique event, and what the aviation world needs to do to be prepared for the next similar occurrence, as Icelandic authorities warn Europe that more volcanic eruptions are forecast over the next 20 years.

Have a look at images the Finnish air force released of its Boeing F-18 Hornets which show the effects of volcanic dust ingestion from inside the engines.

The jets were involved in a training exercise just hours before the imposition of airspace restrictions due to the ash cloud spreading.

And Flight covered the dangers to aircraft engines 28 years ago. Read an archive feature about Capt Eric Moody gliding to safety his British Airways Boeing 747 into Jakarta, Indonesia.

Week on the Web

The Apple iPad was launched over the Easter weekend and we at Flightglobal have been discussing how we could use it.

Simply type in Flightglobal.com and browse as normal to see how the site would look on the new Apple iPad.

And read Mary Kirby's RunwayGirl blog about renting the devices to passengers on flights without traditional IFE installed.

She recommends reading a post by SimplyFlying's Shisham Nigam who doesn't think the iPad will replace or kill IFE, but could be a strong complement, with a number of airlines just going iPad-only.

One hundred years ago this week Flight reported on a de Havilland aircraft crash. Have a look at the article showing pictures of the wreckage of a Havilland I "denoting the inadequacy, as regards strength, of this 850-lb machine". And see some general arrangement diagrams of flyer silhouettes from a show at Olympia.

FlightBlogger broke news that Gulfstream is developing "clean sheet successors to its G450 and G550 large-cabin business jets, incorporating concepts and systems designed for its flagship G650." Although Gulfstream declined to comment, saying the company "does not comment on new programs or rumors of new programs until it is ready to announce a program publicly."

Week on the Web (5 January - 11 January)

The Airbus A380 was the most important aircraft of the decade according to Flightglobal users as a result of the holiday season's poll question.

The A380 came top at 46% out of a list of suggested aircraft including the Boeing 787, Citation Mustang, Eurofighter Typhoon and Northrup Grumman Global Hawk among others.

Users were also able to nominate other aircraft as it had had its first flight or come into service in the last 10 years.

The poll question was inspired by an AirSpace forum discussion "A decade in review: What have been the highlights/events that shaped the Noughties?"

Take a look at what Flight was reporting on 100 years ago with 1910's first issue of the year. The front cover hosts a picture of a "clever 'faked' photograph" with the caption: "An impression of the future - flying in the clouds". It's good to know we were predicting the future back then.

AirSpace has some great images uploaded by users including this one, one of the most commented, of an RAF Harrier by TJ.

Week on the Web (29 December - 5 January)

While most of us have been eating cold turkey every day for the last week, the aviation world did not stop.

Here at Flightglobal, we put together some lists including Flightglobal's list of the year's first flights, roll-outs and anniversaries, how we covered the air shows around the globe and of course the usual top tens from the stories, the pictures and the videos that had you clicking furiously to see what the big noise was about.

You've still got time to enter the Webbies 09 Flightglobal's Aviation Web Awards. You can nominate your own favourite sites, as well, in the eight aviation-related categories including two new categories celebrating community and enthusiast websites and effective use of social media. The closing date for entries and nominations is 10th January so get cracking.

See how Flight saw the world in its last issue of its first year. In the 18th December 1909 issue, a reader, Harold Kelk wrote to the editor questioning the origination of the word "aviation", saying: M. Jules Verne used [the word] in his book "The Clipper of the Clouds ".

"I think 'aviation' a much pleasanter word to use than 'volitation', and its exact meaning quite near enough to the mark to justify its use," he says.

Week on the Web 22-28 September

Our #wheresstefan competition on Twitter is well underway with three events in different cities down and more to come. Correct guesses win a Stefan t-shirt so follow our elusive friend (twitter.com/stefanthepilot).

Last week Willie Walsh announced proposals to cut airline emissions by half the 2005 level by 2050.

Users on AirSpace are discussing this and some say they've heard all this before. One user suggests airlines "don't expand, and use hydrogen", another says: " aviation should have been included in Kyoto but it is one polluter among many."

A flying programme to celebrate Birmingham International's 70th anniversary included an autogyro, a military air display and a large number of civil aircraft including an imperial Hercules and an Emirates A380 see more of the event on AirSpace.

You can now buy photos and reprints from Flightglobal's unique 100-year image archive. The Flightglobal Image Store features thousands of historical and modern images, including our extensive technical cutaway drawings and they're available any way you want them, from canvas or jigsaws.

Week on the Web

Flight International issue 25-31 August 2009

Be honest, who really takes notice of those safety demonstrations before takeoff?

Charter operator Thomson Airways knows this and has come up with a way to get passengers to sit up and pay attention by using children as cabin crew giving the instructions, which is all very heart-warming and actually very effective.

Check out Kieran Daly's blog post pointing to Boston Globe's 40 "fabulous" aviation pictures.

It's a spectacular selection, including an impressive shot of a hot-air balloon above the clouds in Germany and a helicopter, with tourists onboard, in front of Angel Falls at Canaima National Park.

Read about the Su-27 fighter jet that disappeared behind trees at Poland's Radom air show recently and burst into flames killing both pilots and view a newsclip of its aerial display.

Twitter user, RAFairman uploaded an image showing part of an aircraft and challenged followers to guess its type.

Our very own Stefan the Pilot was the winner guessing correctly that the image was of a Westland Wessex helicopter.

See more of the Wessex, once described by Flight International as the "world's largest VTOL aircraft".

Follow Stefan on Twitter... He's going to be busy over the next few months.

Topics in the Archive (and a new one on Innovation)

Our dedicate (and slow!) march towards documenting the highlights from our 100 year history continues.

It's slow going as the relevant coverage (in the archive) of each specific event has to be individually researched. The trick is to ensure that our hand-picked links are to the most appropriate original content, whether it be a feature or just a simple reference, depending on the event itself.

For example, when highlighting the first ever Paris Aero Salon in December 1908, we opted to link to a comprehensive review of the event as this gives the reader a more rounded sense of the event. If however we're linking to a breaking news event, such as the demise of the Red Baron, then the first report of the event is the most appropriate as it carries a greater sense of immediacy for the reader.

As we go through the archive topic by topic and year by year we catalogue these links and when there's enough around a certain topic we put them together, while continuing to add to those already live with more links as we log them.

The latest topic collection is Innovation, and includes such goodies as the use of cockpit glass, how men fly, and the birth of the TriStar.

If you'd like to add to any of our topics or suggest your own then let our Content Editor - Babs - know ... .

Take a look at the 6 March 1969 issue of Flight in our pdf archive dedicated to the first supersonic aircraft which includes an article on the technology used, aircraft structure, fuel system, aerodynamics, flight testing, payload accommodation, aircraft data, a cutaway drawing and an airline pilot's view.

We have 5 copies of a new book; Concorde: A Photographic History to give away and we've created a gallery for you to upload your images and a forum discussion to share your memories of the iconic aircraft.

Get involved in the discussion on AirSpace about Rolls-Royce confirming its RTM322 turboshaft engine is the "engine of record" for a new Eurocopter high-speed rotorcraft research programme dubbed "X3".

One user suggest the X3 looks "remarkably like a modernised Fairy Rotodyne" but wonders "what powers the rotor because the drawing shown (in the discussion) has no anti torque tail rotor which suggests that the rotor is powered, when required, by blade tip jets."

Have you suffered from contaminated cabin air asks another forum post. Neurotoxins get into the cabin air of almost all passenger airliners.

Aircraft manufacturers and the airlines say that when it happens the doses are harmless. One user says he was regularly exposed to fumes over a five year period and suffered headaches, lightheaded and dizziness.

Nausea, stomach pains and diahorrea. Fatigue and lack of concentration. He was later diagnosed with Aerotoxic Syndrome and declared medically unfit to fly.

See a great image of three Virgin aircraft at Los Angeles International Airport last week following the launch of Virgin Blue's long-haul arm V Australia with an inaugural flight from Sydney.

Week on the Web is also available as an audio podcast on AirSpace and iTunes.

Scanning fail demonstrated in the PDF Archive

This is one of the pages we found in our 210k PDF historical magazine archive which we got a company (which will remain nameless) to scan in for us.

The person on this shift obviously struggled with the steep learning curve of "turn page, let go of page, scan page" work cycle.
