Week on the Web (29 December - 5 January)

While most of us have been eating cold turkey every day for the last week, the aviation world did not stop.

Here at Flightglobal, we put together some lists including Flightglobal's list of the year's first flights, roll-outs and anniversaries, how we covered the air shows around the globe and of course the usual top tens from the stories, the pictures and the videos that had you clicking furiously to see what the big noise was about.

You've still got time to enter the Webbies 09 Flightglobal's Aviation Web Awards. You can nominate your own favourite sites, as well, in the eight aviation-related categories including two new categories celebrating community and enthusiast websites and effective use of social media. The closing date for entries and nominations is 10th January so get cracking.

See how Flight saw the world in its last issue of its first year. In the 18th December 1909 issue, a reader, Harold Kelk wrote to the editor questioning the origination of the word "aviation", saying: M. Jules Verne used [the word] in his book "The Clipper of the Clouds ".

"I think 'aviation' a much pleasanter word to use than 'volitation', and its exact meaning quite near enough to the mark to justify its use," he says.

Week on the Web (29 September 5 October)

Stefan has covered his fourth event since the beginning of September, but were you able to guess #wheresstefan? Correct guesses win a Stefan t-shirt, so follow our elusive friend on Twitter.

See some great images of retro aircraft from AirSpace user Ace79 who went to the Vintage Aircraft Weekend at Paine Field Everett, WA, recently.

And why not add your views to the discussion on the accuracy of Thomson's inflight safety video. One user comments about the airline's marketing video: "You should only be seeing it on the flight after you've already bought your ticket and got on the aircraft - advertising in retrospect?"

See a vlog post on Mary Kirby's Runway Girl blog about the latest in inflight entertainment on a recent visit to Florida to see JetBlue subsidiary LiveTV.

A US Marine Corps pilot suggests in an issue of Joint Forces Quarterly that the age of stealth domination in airpower is over according to the DEW Line blog.

The pilot says the US military and industry needs to launch a crash technology programme. "If anything, the technology could be leveraged to understand the techniques potential adversaries could use to shoot down our stealth aircraft".

Week on the Web 15-21 September

Have you been getting involved in Stefan the Pilot's guessing game #wheresstefan on Twitter?

If not, it's not too late to win yourself a Stefan-adorned t-shirt.

So far a few of Stefan's followers have guessed correctly Stefan's whereabouts and which events he's been busy attending over the last couple of weeks.

He's gearing up to jet off somewhere new later in the week. Can you out-fox Stefan's cryptic clues?

There's a discussion on AirSpace about acceptable behaviour on an aircraft and how to deal with unruly passengers following news of a court case involving a drunken socialite's racy antics onboard a Kingfisher Airlines flight.

See the pictures on a Runway Girl blog post about IFE handsets. She says: "The picture you see is not the final look of the touch screen handset that will be flying next year. But it gives you a pretty good idea of what's coming down the pike."

Week on the Web (1-7 September)

So many questions arise from a video on the Flight Blog about a low flying fighter jet flying over a man who doesn't seem at all bothered and gives a thumbs up. It can't be real. Can it?

He remains on his feet despite the jet blast. Some say the aircraft's a Mirage, others say a Harrier, and a Super Hornet is another suggestion. Let us know your thoughts.

A Handley Page Victor bomber aptly nicknamed "Teasin' Tina" gave shocked onlookers more than they bargained for when it accidently took off during the Cold War Jets day at Bruntingthorpe Aerodrome.

The Cold War bomber apparently took off as the co-pilot (who was an engineer and not a pilot, cue the "engineers can never be pilots" jokes) accidently hit the throttle when the aircraft was meant to just taxi down the runway for a photo shoot. See footage of the takeoff.

The Flightglobal Image Store launched last week features thousands of historical and modern images, including our extensive technical cutaway drawings with options for potential shoppers to purchase images in their preferred format and style, whether it's on canvas, framed or even as a jigsaw.

Don't forget to follow Stefan on Twitter... He's going to be busy over the next few months. Why not guess where he is from the clues he tweets on his travels.
Week on the Web

Flight International issue 25-31 August 2009

Be honest, who really takes notice of those safety demonstrations before takeoff?

Charter operator Thomson Airways knows this and has come up with a way to get passengers to sit up and pay attention by using children as cabin crew giving the instructions, which is all very heart-warming and actually very effective.

Check out Kieran Daly's blog post pointing to Boston Globe's 40 "fabulous" aviation pictures.

It's a spectacular selection, including an impressive shot of a hot-air balloon above the clouds in Germany and a helicopter, with tourists onboard, in front of Angel Falls at Canaima National Park.

Read about the Su-27 fighter jet that disappeared behind trees at Poland's Radom air show recently and burst into flames killing both pilots and view a newsclip of its aerial display.

Twitter user, RAFairman uploaded an image showing part of an aircraft and challenged followers to guess its type.

Our very own Stefan the Pilot was the winner guessing correctly that the image was of a Westland Wessex helicopter.

See more of the Wessex, once described by Flight International as the "world's largest VTOL aircraft".

The weekly podcast is available on AirSpace and soon to be listed on iTunes for those who want to subscribe to auto downloads (I'll post the link when it hits the charts).

As always we welcome your feedback on the length, format and content. If you'd love to see other stuff included then let us know.

New podcasts on Flightglobal

In partnership with IAG’s Addison Schonland, we’re hosting a series of podcasts with Flight journalists on various topical subjects such as 787 flight delays and the latest advancements for in-flight entertainment.

The podcasts are free to download and can be found here …

And on the lighter side Flight International’s Deputy Editor Max Kingsley-Jones had the opportunity to interview Formula 1 star Lewis Hamilton as he flew to Belfast on a Bombardier Learjet.

So if you’d like to here what Lewis has to say about his current mode of transport as well as his thoughts on next season’s F1, then get it here …
