Today we've upgraded our popular Blogs page with a tidier and up-to-date design.

The new page leads with the latest blog post from the portfolio of Flightglobal blogs.

We've also featured the weekly editorial "comment" from Flight International magazine (also know as the opinion leader column).

This is hosted on Murdo Morrison's Flight International Editor's Blog and is also published in the front of the magazine each week, and offers the "Flight International take" on topical industry matters.

The rest of the page includes all the popular blog-type links and lists, such as the full blog portfolio (from FlightBlogger to the Green Wing), all the latest posts, comments, tweets, social media links, and the top user blogs from contributors on the AirSpace forums.

@BoeingAirplanes crowned Paris Power Tweeter 2011 #pas11

BoeingAirplanes has been crowned the Paris Power Tweeter for this year's Paris Air Show.

The award recognises the most active, influential and engaged social media proponent from the show's exhibitors.

BoeingAirplanes posted a total of 94 tweets during the first four days of the show (19-22 June) and received an impressive 469 retweets of their Paris announcements.

It helped swell their followers by over 650 up to a total of 28,745.

The Award was calculated by measuring the number of tweets from each twitter account using the Paris Air Show hashtag #pas11, the number of retweets by the respective followers, and the growth in those following the account.

Twitter powerhouse and Flightglobal journalist Jon Ostrower said of Boeing's achievement: "The award is recognition for Boeing's commitment to bringing together those who bring aerospace to life and those who follow with passion and enthusiasm around the world."

Notable mentions in the Power Tweeter award go to Airbus - generated the highest percentage of retweets per tweet, GEAviation - who clocked up an impressive 177 #pas11 tweets, and CFM_Engines, who pulled in a massive 4,284 new followers mainly through their innovative sponsorship of the #pas11 hashtag.

Learmount answered a question from user Jeff S about streaming black box data in realtime from an aircraft while it is flying. He wondered whether it would ever happen or could it be "Star Trek fantasy".

Read the live updates as they happened during Airbus' annual press conference during which Sir Richard Branson announced an order of 30 A320neos for Virgin America, the first airline to order the re-engined aircraft complete with sharklet wingtips.

Week on the web

The Chengdu J-20, China's fifth-generation fighter flew for the first time in public, as confirmed by numerous online reports, photos and video of the large, delta-winged aircraft getting airborne. Chinese President Hu Jintao also has confirmed the milestone.

Last week images of its first flight and video footage of it taxiing emerged but were quickly dismissed as a hoax, even by industry experts.

Flightglobal's own Greg Waldron suggested that a true Chinese combat aircraft is probably well over a decade away from readiness. He was sceptical as to why the Chinese military chose to introduce the world to its J-20 with images that emerged through plane spotters' postings on the Internet.

The Flight Blog houses all the J-20 content including blog posts of a speculative nature and the conversation on Twitter .

There's a great post on RunwayGirl about a campaign by social networking site Facebook aimed at convincing United Airlines to go fleet-wide with in-flight WiFi.

"United is the only major airline without WiFi. United for WiFi is a grassroots effort aimed at bringing inflight internet to United Airlines. We run the gamut from business professionals to casual flyers and we need our internet 10,000 feet up!"

See a great pic of an Ilyushin IL-96 by AirSpace user TripleDelta "after a spirited departure from Salzburg, Austria".

It's also worth mentioning that time is fast running out to enter/nominate your own or your favourite websites in the Webbies - Flightglobal's Aviation Web Awards. These awards celebrate and acknowledge the best and brightest aviation and aerospace websites and digital activities of the last 12 months.

Now in its third year with new and improved categories, Flightglobal welcomes entries and nominations from the entire online aviation and aerospace community, from established industry leaders to striving newcomers. Closing date is 15 January. Do it now.

What to expect from Flightglobal in the year ahead

2010 was a year which saw Flightglobal gear up its mobile offering, grow its strong offering on the Social Web and introduce Pro - a premium service offering and expert level of news and data.

2011 - will be a year building upon those foundations.

Going social

As digital social interaction gains ubiquity across the planet, we'll be plugging all activity into the Social Web.

This means you'll be able to move neatly between your favourite Flightglobal content - news, blogs, images etc ... - and your favourite social services - Twitter, Facebook, Youtube etc ... with greater ease than before.

Going Pro

Flightglobal will continue to launch new professional services this year designed to facilitate professional decision-making within the industry.

These Pro services will be integrated throughout Flightglobal as well as accessible via a personalized dashboard.

Going mobile

The lightning-fast growth of the smart phone and tablet market means that more and more of our million-strong audience want us to develop apps, updates and feeds to stay in touch with the industry while out and about.

We'll be continuing to develop in this space in order to keep pace with demand.

Going all show business

Our industry-leading event coverage has transformed the way people have been staying in touch with air show and exhibition news.

In 2011, we'll be at more shows than ever, with more reporters producing more content, publishing more iFlight magazines and more mobile updates, and producing an unrivalled digital experience for anyone who's serious about aviation ... you get the idea.

Happy New Year.

The livery matches that used by the airline when the 757 entered service and features the single brand 'British' and 'speedbird' logo on the forward fuselage, and the familiar Union flag design on the fin.

Week on the Web

The Flightglobal team decamped to Geneva's Palexpo to report on EBACE for the iFDN, Flight Evening News and the summing up in the show report in this issue.

The team worked tirelessly to bring you news, blog posts from FlightBlogger, Learmount and As the Cro(ft) Flies, images, and videos of interviews with the movers and shakers of the business aviation community.

You can find all this throughout the pages of the interactive magazine and our dedicated EBACE 2010 page. And see what was being said on twitter by following the show's hashtag.

Eurocopter joined forces with automotive and design powerhouse Mercedes Benz to launch an interior for its entrepreneurial EC145 customers who work hard and play hard.

And then there's the Design Q and BAE Systems partnership that unveiled striking interior concepts including one where the cargo door opens to reveal an air deck described as the "ultimate living space".

Week on the Web plus graphic showing Flightglobal's all time top stories

See Flightglobal's coverage of the volcanic ash cloud from a major volcanic eruption in Iceland that caused travel chaos around the world.

Our dedicated Icelandic ash cloud page kept users up to date with news from our own journalists and from around the web using realtime multimedia publishing platform CoverItLive which spewed out plumes of information from Twitter about the grounding of aircraft, live satellite images from NASA and ESA and the Met Office tracking the travelling ash cloud over European airspace.

Watch David Learmount's video explaining consequences and the impact of this unique event, and what the aviation world needs to do to be prepared for the next similar occurrence, as Icelandic authorities warn Europe that more volcanic eruptions are forecast over the next 20 years.

Have a look at images the Finnish air force released of its Boeing F-18 Hornets which show the effects of volcanic dust ingestion from inside the engines.

The jets were involved in a training exercise just hours before the imposition of airspace restrictions due to the ash cloud spreading.

And Flight covered the dangers to aircraft engines 28 years ago. Read an archive feature about Capt Eric Moody gliding to safety his British Airways Boeing 747 into Jakarta, Indonesia.

Week on the Web

Take a look at the videos from last month's Low Cost Airlines World Asia Pacific Conference where we produced videos of interviews with CEOs including Virgin Blue's Brett Godfrey who is taking a "cautiously buoyant" attitude this year, and Azran-Osman Rani of Air Asia X who is: "Breaking all the rules as we always do."

See our page dedicated to last week's first flight of the Boeing 747-8F. We covered the event using Twitter, video images, and compiled content to give you "the story so far". See AirSpace user Andrew Siebert's jet City Report blog post on the event. There are some great images as the new freighter lifts off the ground.

See a forum post about easyJet selling Starbucks coffee to passengers. A cup of Starbucks coffee will cost €3, compared to €2.5 for other coffee brands served on the company's flights.

Runway Girl Mary Kirby writes a post about economy seating in the Boeing 787. Recaro Comfort Line's "ultra slim seating", which Mary says is already installed in Qantas Airways' Airbus A380 economy-class cabins "is attracting a lot of interest from airlines", and suggests Boeing is considering a version of the same seating may be used. "Hey, it's got hammocks for your feet! Why the hell not?" she says.

Week on the Web (29 December - 5 January)

While most of us have been eating cold turkey every day for the last week, the aviation world did not stop.

Here at Flightglobal, we put together some lists including Flightglobal's list of the year's first flights, roll-outs and anniversaries, how we covered the air shows around the globe and of course the usual top tens from the stories, the pictures and the videos that had you clicking furiously to see what the big noise was about.

You've still got time to enter the Webbies 09 Flightglobal's Aviation Web Awards. You can nominate your own favourite sites, as well, in the eight aviation-related categories including two new categories celebrating community and enthusiast websites and effective use of social media. The closing date for entries and nominations is 10th January so get cracking.

See how Flight saw the world in its last issue of its first year. In the 18th December 1909 issue, a reader, Harold Kelk wrote to the editor questioning the origination of the word "aviation", saying: M. Jules Verne used [the word] in his book "The Clipper of the Clouds ".

"I think 'aviation' a much pleasanter word to use than 'volitation', and its exact meaning quite near enough to the mark to justify its use," he says.

Week on the Web (29 September 5 October)

Stefan has covered his fourth event since the beginning of September, but were you able to guess #wheresstefan? Correct guesses win a Stefan t-shirt, so follow our elusive friend on Twitter.

See some great images of retro aircraft from AirSpace user Ace79 who went to the Vintage Aircraft Weekend at Paine Field Everett, WA, recently.

And why not add your views to the discussion on the accuracy of Thomson's inflight safety video. One user comments about the airline's marketing video: "You should only be seeing it on the flight after you've already bought your ticket and got on the aircraft - advertising in retrospect?"
