Who does what on Flightglobal: An update

It's been a while since I've done a who's who post and there are a few new faces doing cool things on the site so here's a run down.

Stuart Clarke - Deputy Editor

Stuart was formerly our Community Editor, looking after AirSpace (in the guise of admin - Maverick), and coordinating our blogging and social media efforts.

In recent times Stuart has taken on the role of Deputy Editor, and in addition to overseeing the community aspects of the site, is now looking after the day-to-day editorial agenda on Flightglobal.

So if you've got something juicy for us (or in the extremely unlikely event of spotting an error on the site), let Stu know ...

Twitter: Follow Stu ...

Henk Ombelet - Head of Product Development

Henk joins the Flightglobal team to spearhead our continuing drive for pioneering new innovation and technologies on the site.

Henk has been working on Flightglobal's sister sites Air Transport Intelligence and Commercial Aviation Online for some time now, and he will be largely involved in the on-going integration of those sites into the Flightglobal platform as core premium content (aka Flightglobal Pro).

Henk's also heavily involved in the development of our mobile proposition - namely a series of iPhone apps / upgrades planned for this year.

If you've got any ideas for new site functionality (or bugs / irritations), then let Henk know ...

Twitter: Follow Henk ...

Will Horton - Social Media Correspondent

Will joined the FG staff following a great summer internship at our Washington DC office, where he showed us all how to get more down with the kids.

Among other things, Will's the talent behind our Flightglobal Facebook pages (including the 787, 747-8 and A350XWB fan pages), the fantastic Image of the Day Blog, Wings Down Under Blog and a lot of our Twitter activity.

If you've got any good images, or suggestions of cool / quirky stuff for Flightglobal to feature, then let Will know ...

Twitter: Follow Will ...

David Kaminski-Morrow notches 1 million pages views on his stories

Flight journalist David Kaminski-Morrow recently broke a new record for the site, notching up a million page views so far this year.

Deputy news editor David demolished last year's efforts with a whole bunch of cracking stories, maximising their impact through the use of videos and images to accompany the textual detail where possible. See below for a list of his top five.

The figures represent a huge increase on last year's best, when Max Kingsley-Jones scored 644,498 page views over the full twelve months. With four months of the year still to go, the annual record looks set to soar.

I think this step up in performance has many contriuting factors - it's not just David but all the Flight journalists that are pulling in more traffic than in 2007. However one key to their success is the use of our web analytics tool, which helps Flight journalists keep track of their performance, make sense of what works online and respond by tuning their output to the needs of the users.

Developer humour

Flightglobal, like any large website, has the occasional glitch.

And like London buses these issues always seem to come along in groups.

So at the moment our developers are gamely battling against several nasty gremlins including a long running glitchy blog platform (solution due in May), some code corruption issues (nearly sorted), and some problems with formatting on AirSpace (fix should be deployed in a week or two).

As a bit of a cathartic release one of them (Robi) conjured up the graphic below and emailed it to me under the subject “User Feedback”.

How droll ...

(if it's a bit quick for you it shows Commander Riker from Star Trek the Next Generation looking at flightglobal.com and getting excited. But then ultimately his hopes are crushed as he hits the dreaded "Server Error in Application" page).

Meet the Flightglobal team

Thought you might like to know who is beavering away behind the scenes at “Teamglobal” to produce this wonderful site.

There are, in fact, a lot of people at Flight that contribute significantly to Flighglobal but who also have other responsibilities – I’ll no doubt blog about them in future.

But this bunch is the full-time dedicated website team and an have various responsibilities on the site

Myself
I’m Michael and I’ve had the pleasure of running the site since March 2007.
I look after the editorial direction and strategic development of the site, via the medium of long and frequent meetings.

Babs
Babs is Flightglobal’s Content Editor. She coordinates the works from our collective journalistic talent and decides what makes the home page and section home pages. She also blogs on the Flight International Blog and is partial to a glass of champagne.

Disco Stu
Stu is Flightglobal’s Community Editor. He’s primarily responsible for looking after AirSpace and all of the Flight Blogs. He also gets involved with the Flightglobal’s presence outside of our own site. For example, our Facebook Group – which everyone’s welcome to join.

Kelley
Kelley is our Webmaster (or Webmistress if you know her really well …) and is the longest serving member of the team. She’s responsible for publishing all the news and features and ensuring they all look good and have lots of good links in. Kelley also holds a Private Pilot’s License.

Paul
Paul is our newest team member but extremely experienced on the aviation side. He’s our Images Coordinator and looks after the Flight images (including Cutaways) on AirSpace as well as editing the Images of the Day blog.

A beautiful bunch I’m sure you’ll all agree.
