Blogger tries Skype on Southwest 737

Technical call info.JPG

Here’s a good one – blogger Dan York gave Skype a go go go on a Row 44-equipped Southwest 737 and had mixed results (but results nonetheless!)

Key quote:

Sadly, though, the connectivity didn’t last forever. After about maybe 30 minutes of trying this out and making video calls to different people, my Skype account went offline.

Check out Dan’s technical call info to the right (click image to enlarge) and give his excellent blog a read if you can.

Dan failed to mention the flight attendant whacking him across the back of the head at the request of the other passengers for hogging bandwidth. Thanks Dan!

Actually, they were probably whacking him upside the head for yelling into his computer while trying out VoIP. Bandwidth wouldn’t have been a problem. I suspect he would have been throttled if he consumed too much.

I must say, this post of yours is a bit misleading.

Please folks, take time to check out Dan York’s blog post. What Mary forgets to mention on her post is that the reason he looses connectivity is because SouthWest is blocking Skype calls (which, by the way, is not surprising in the least)!

Dan goes on to mention that all his other favorite IM clients worked fine for the duration of the flight, and he was getting 3 MBps download at 10,000 feet! Amazing.

Really, old chap! I do say…

C’mon! It was a very respectable post. No one thinks the less of Row44 because of it, but I can appreciate that you Row44 guys may be a bit sensitive to anything appearing less than genuine.

That said, they appear to have a solid product. The results of the throughput test were most impressive. Bring it onwards and upwards!

So, spill it, Mike! When do we start seeing more a/c equipped with Row44′s Ku offering? You guys should be churning this out!

I want to start having interactive game playing from 30,000 feet, where I can vaquish scary dragons and cast magic spells on evil wizards with my fellow nerds/playmates.

I really really do hope that Southwest and Row 44 continue to block voice calls from in flight. Come on, SWA maybe has a long flight at 3.5 hours, wish I knew someone important enough tthat they’d absolutely NEED to make a call in that time span. Unless you’re saving lives with your knowledge in that very moment, your call can wait…thank you.
