A little birdie has informed me that Lufthansa has decided to offer Panasonic’s eXConnect Ku-band connectivity service on overseas flights and not the Ku-band offering proposed by the T-Mobile/ViaSat/TriaGnoSys teaming.
You’ll recall that in the aftermath of Connexion by Boeing’s commercial demise, Panasonic offered to fill Connexion’s shoes, and said it would allow Lufthansa and other Connexion customers to keep those heavy MELCO antennas on their aircraft.
No doubt that is a key consideration now as Lufthansa mulls its options. If you’ve been following this blog, which I certainly hope you have, you know that Lufthansa recently told me - on video – that it is less sure of a timeline for reinstating high-speed connectivity on overseas flights.
I guess we might now have a little insight as to why the carrier expressed uncertainty.
The timing on this rumour couldn’t be riper. Connexion by Boeing’s former chief marketer David Friedman, with whom I had a recent chat, told me that Panasonic might just have the right IFE&C mousetrap.
“I think Panasonic, given what they have with their entertainment [systems] in general, are in a perfect place. They really seem to be able to have it all. Their systems are already on the plane. I think Panasonic is very well situated if they can pull it off.”
