Tallying them up

Our fine friends in the in-flight connectivity world were busy in 2009. But, as we near the end of the year, it’s clear that some are not as far along as they had originally planned.

Nevertheless, passengers are increasingly finding themselves on aircraft equipped with either in-flight mobile connectivity or airborne high-speed Internet (or mobile connectivity plus light Internet). And that’s a big ole difference over 2008.

It’s amazing so many carriers have taken the “light Internet” option, as you’ve put it. Nearly 700 is a pretty good number.

You must have not been paying attention today. Aircell signed Continental.

Not paying attention? Surely you jest. Continental won’t start deploying Gogo until 2010. This is a “tally um up” 2009 chart, thank you very much. :)

By the way I was on a flight between Atlanta and Newark yesterday and Delta is trying to advertise the Gogo system on their planes and is giving away free connectivity until the end of the year.
Code is DELTATRYGOGO, bad news is, either the system is not working well enough or too many people tried and took it down because I tried to get in soooo many times and it never worked, the system would go through, one, two pages and drop.. not sure that this is the way to entice people to pay for the service at a later stage!
I think there were at least 15/20 people with laptops trying to connect and while walking down the aisle, the only thing I could notice was either grumbling because it did work or the same error page as I had earlier before I totally gave up!
Bad for Delta, bad for Gogo, bad for connectivity onboard… Shame!
