Delta scraps plan for handhelds; selects embedded IFE for 747s

Remember when Delta Air Lines released an RFI to put 350+ non-embedded, handheld IFE devices on each of the 16 747-400s inherited from its merger with Northwest Airlines? Portable IFE makers quickly responded to the RFI with comprehensive proposals.

Unfortunately for them, Delta has decided to add in-seat audio and video on demand (AVOD) in economy class on the 16 747s in addition to its 52 767-300ERs, which will result in the carrier offering in-seat entertainment in both business and economy class on all its wide-body aircraft (sweet!)

Delta is a big customer of Panasonic Avionics. Asked why it selected embedded IFE for the 747s over portables, Delta told RWG:

"Consistency of product certainly was one of the considerations along with proven reliability within Delta's existing fleet."
So I guess we can expect to see Delta keep those 747s in its fleet for a while, huh?
