They're baaaaaaaaaaaaack. Designs for stand-up seating are among the original ideas being submitted by companies and designers competing this year for illustrious Crystal Cabin Awards.

Crystal Cabin Awards.jpgHere are some of the ideas being publicized by the so-called 'Joint Initiative Hamburg - the place for aviation', which awards the snazzy trophies each year at the Aircraft Interiors Expo.

A jacket that replaces the aircraft seat, attached to the cabin walls with belts and buckles, designed to make the flight as comfortable for the passenger as sitting in a hammock.

A wearable device, equipped with climate control and communications technology, which surrounds the passenger's body like a cocoon, providing more private space.

A mobile aircraft seat for physically disabled passengers, which awaits passengers at the check-in counter and allows them to roll directly into the cabin, where they have freedom of movement.

A flexible, expandable lavatory facility providing increases in both comfort and hygiene.

"These are just four examples of the extraordinary variety of ideas of the entries," says Walter Birkhan, president of the Crystal Cabin Award and coordinator of the Joint Initiative Hamburg - The place for aviation.

His group assures that some of the designs being submitted give economy passengers grounds for hope as "they, too, may benefit from more comfortable air travel".

Are they referring to the aforementioned "jacket that replaces the aircraft seat"? Will it be a one-size-fits-all solution?

In the meantime, perhaps we should do like PoshAir founder and chief executive Darlisa Crawford and get inside her sleeping bag when traveling in economy class on long-haul flights.
