Sounds to me that they did not get very frank about anything.

I know what you’re saying, and I must admit when I wrote that headline I was in a slightly sarcastic mode. But the truth is ANA did reveal a few things: a) They intend to fully comply with the ADs (reading ANA’s comments leading up to the ADs called into question their intent in this regard); b) ANA’s fleet has countless Koito seats (so much so they don’t even seem to know how many); c) ANA has selected an alternative supplier (holy retrofit batman) and d) ANA thinks it’s unprofessional to talk about the issue.

This is a big loss of face for ANA.
And…..to be questioned like this by a gaijin woman?
(I hope you were sitting, your stature might have also caused some discomfort.)

I was seated. This was the tail end of a lengthier interview about ANA’s plans for the 787 interior. Nobody seemed to know anything about the interior, even though ANA had called a press conference to show off the new livery and the new interior. It was all very peculiar. ANA did confirm that it is using Sicma for its 787 seats.

I suspect that you might have hit the Paris version of the Tokyo Auto Show, nobody goes there to ask hardball questions. Shuffle through, go oooh and aaah and mutter a few platitudes on your way out. Innocuous questions are the rule of the day.

I’m sure had an interior engineer been present who had the latitude to brief you would have had a better interview.
