Mad props to Garuda Indonesia for its new passenger ‘centricity’

If you want to revamp your image, you must consider the passenger experience. Garuda Indonesia, which began a fleet revitalization programme in 2009, shows us how it is embracing customer ‘centricity’. A new Super First Class will be introduced to the carrier’s new three-class Boeing 777-300ERs. Deliveries begin in 2013.

Want to be linefit? Bring cash and a big customer!

Why is Zodiac’s SiT seat-centric in-flight entertainment (IFE) system offered linefit on Airbus A330/A340 aircraft, while the likes of Lumexis’ fiber optic-based IFE system and IMS’s own seat-centric solution (pictured above) is not? Well folks, like so many things in this world, cash plays a big part.Airframers can’t afford (and are unwilling) to do the […]

Gulp. That’s cheap. #PAS11

Gulf Air, as first reported by RWG, is poised to bring Panasonic Avionics’ eXConnect in-flight high-speed Internet solution to its fleet (could it announce the deal this week at the Paris Air Show?) but that’s not the only in-flight entertainment and connectivity news breaking about the carrier. According to a recent online post on the […]

VIDEO: Real-time safety monitoring saddles up to black boxes

Tonight I’m working on a story about Toronto-based Star Navigation Systems Group’s new in-flight safety monitoring system (ISMS) with GPS tracking software, which is being billed as the perfect counterpart to traditional black boxes, particularly in the aftermath of the 1 June 2009 fatal loss of an Air France Airbus A330 (investigators never found the […]

Industry expert Jon Norris tables IFEC forecast for 2011

What does 2011 hold for in-flight entertainment and connectivity (IFEC)? That’s not the easiest question to answer. After all, technology is moving SO fast, and a host of new players are entering the field. I decided to put the query to industry expert Jonathan Norris, who holds the title of vice-president cabin design office at […]

Row 44 takes Panasonic to task over FCC application

Panasonic Avionics’ application for US FCC authority to operate an aeronautical mobile satellite service earth station network in the Ku-band has made in-flight connectivity rival Row 44 rather hot under the collar. In what will surely give the industry a case of déjà vu (remember ViaSat’s long-running objection to Row 44′s application?), Row 44 is […]

Finnair reveals in-flight connectivity plan for long haul

The other day I blogged about a report in AirAsia’s in-flight mag that Finnair is offering OnAir in-flight mobile connectivity to passengers. It turns out that the AirAsia article isn’t entirely accurate (the carrier isn’t offering connectivity yet). BUT, Finnair has revealed to RWG that it is preparing for a “wireless cabin communication environment” and […]
