If you're a defense company, that means hundreds of millions of sustainment and modernization dollars every year can be yours for the taking.
Interestingly, I've just learned the US Air Force is taking a very different approach with this contract. Instead of awarding the prime role to a single manufacturer, the USAF will divvy up the work into task orders and make a pre-selected group of contractors compete for every job.
Lockheed Martin currently owns the prime contractor role, with Northrop Grumman and BAE Systems as major partners. You can be sure the likes of Boeing, L-3 Communications, Raytheon smell the opportunity.
