A public opinion poll by Norwegian broadcaster NRK released today asked their countrymen whether the F-16 should be replaced by the Gripen or F-35.

The results are conclusive: a solid majority of Norwegians absolutely, positively believe that they have no idea what the poller is talking about!

Officially, the results are: Gripen-37%, Joint Strike Fighter-18%, Don't Know-45%.

I do not consider this a lack of awareness. Rather, I see it as an honest acknowledgment of understandable ignorance on a peripheral issue.

What, no option for new F-16s to replace the old ones? I demand a recount.

Right here would be a good place for a link to one of the famous high-AoA crash videos highlighting the Gripen's Dutch-roll or control system saturation tendencies. (end snark)

Seriously, by now the Gripen is probably a great 4th gen design: high performance and very supportable from what I've seen. Which makes it a very high-quality target for LO fifth-gen systems.

The debate in Norway focuses on the issue, whether neutral Sweden will supply Norway with spare parts in case of a conflict. Furthermore it is amazing what people read in outcomes of surveys.
