US Marine Corps is FY10 budget survivor

Being ignored is not so bad sometimes. The US Marine Corps probably won’t complain about being mostly left out of Fiscal 2010 budget roll-out today.

True, the USMC lost the VH-71 presidential helicopter. But other services lost the weapon systems most vital to their identity. The US Army lost every ground vehicle in Future Combat Systems program. The US Navy lost the DDG-1000. The US Air Force lost the F-22, the C-17, Transformational Satellite Communications and the combat search and rescue helicopter (ouch).

And yet Gates never mentioned the USMC’s most treasured modernizationprograms. Even weapon systems with a history of cost overruns andschedules delays, such as the Expeditionary Fighting Vehicle (EFV) andthe MV-22 tiltrotor, escaped mention in Gates’ speech. Thedevelopmental CH-53K and LHA 6 amphibious assault ship also survived.Ditto for the H-1 upgrades program. On top of that, Gates accelerated the F-35 program.

We still don’t know for sure if those programs are safe. Gates left outenormous chunks of the DOD weapons budget. The C-5M, P-8A, JointTactical Radio System and EA-18G also immediately come to mind.

But for now it appears that no news is good news, and no service can be happier about that than the USMC.

YEAH BABY! but remember that in the case of the above mentioned weapon systems, the USMC basically skipped a generation of development in order to get these into service. while the AAV soldiered on, the ARMY had the M-113, M-114, Bradley, and Stryker fighting vehicles. while the ARMY and NAVY had the UH-60, UH-60L and UH-60M, the USMC relied on the CH-46 and CH-53D. and while the Air Force ran thru F-16 and F-15 plus the F-22—the USMC made due with the AV-8B and legacy Hornets…and still they will only get F-35 a year or so before the USAF. so it makes sense that these programs were safe.

This country will become a ‘Legacy” thanks to “Legacy” mentality…
The Chinese, Russians and Indians want nothing better then a “Legacy” Military to destroy…
Thank you Gates, Thank you (N)Obama and “Legacy” congress for making America`s demise all but sealed…
