F-35B performs first short landing [VIDEO]



The Lockheed Martin short-takeoff-and-vertical-landing test fleet continues to progress towards the first vertical landing. The F-35B’s first flight test aircraft — BF-1 — completed a short landing at Patuxent River Naval Air Base, Md. Pratt & Whitney, the engine supplier, posted the video online late this evening.

    If that’s a ‘short field’ landing, how does it compare to a ‘rolling vertical landing’.

    Arr…yes…might be a good idea to fit an arrestor hook.

    Mom always said if you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all. So here goes. It’s good to see that the F-35 lands slow rather than crashing. There!

    Well….at least no one’s embarrassing themselves as bad here as they are at the Ares blog.
    An experienced tester would expect the first short landing event to be more concerned with the controllability of the configuration on approach, touchdown, and rollout. The critical ‘firsts’ being explored and measured here must include the effects of the vertical and near-vertical columns of thrust as the aircraft descends into ground effect and touchdown. Looking at the video, the little ‘dance’ at touchdown is probably as much an artifact of extra thrust added as part of the safety margin, and relative light weight of the aircraft, as much as anything else, including the slight crosswind present (the straightening of the aircraft just before touchdown is called a decrab maneuver BTW). I would estimate (not merely guessing) the touchdown speed was just under 100 kts, assuming the aircraft was not noticeably slowing but was holding approach speed steady plus or minus a knot or two.( Hint: the leading edges of the Threshold markings and Aiming Point Markings are 500 ft apart, and the distance is covered takes approximately 3 secs.

    FWIW, here’s a landing speed estimate update. The previous estimate was a ROM based upon video timestamp on the slider. Using a stopwatch and multiple runs, it looks like the touchdown speed was between 119 and 122 knots.
