VIDEO: Boeing unveils P-8 variant to replace JSTARS



Boeing wins the award for ‘surprise product unveiling’ at this year’s Air Warfare Symposium. I give you the P-8 airborne ground surveillance (AGS) variant, which Boeing is pitching to replace the E-8C JSTARS. (To see what Northrop Grumman has to say about that, read my full story.)

The P-8 AGS mural above includes the first image I’ve seen depicting Raytheon’s next generation advanced airborne sensor (AAS), a moving target indicator previously proposed for the now-canceled EPX program. The P-8 also includes an array of weapons, including bombs in the weapons bay, and a Joint Standoff Weapon (JSOW) and Scan Eagle Compressed Carriage on the wings. The configuration also includes an electro-optical/infrared turret for organic target identification, and two 180kVA generators on the engines to power the radar.

    Not so fast, Boeing. You might want to pitch a C-45 replacement for the JSTARS if you end up with the KC-X contract.

    Northrop estimates that it would cost $1.1 billion to reengine the 17 E-8Cs.
    Am I confused here?
    Installing 68 used JT8D-200 series engines costs 16 million per aircraft?
    4 Million per engine?
    4 million for a used engine?
    Most be some serious engineering goin’ on here. Please tell me there is an avionics upgrade in the price tag.

    But why would you want to field a variant of the Beech 18 for that job??

    The Air Force ought to consider buying a variant of the P-8 as a bomber for use in permissive airspace such as Iraq, Afghanistan, etc. You could load it up with JDAMs as seen here, has a SIGINT capability and a counter-IED/comm jamming capability onboard along with sensors to do ISR and maybe even a UAV control station. It’d probably a lot cheaper per flight hour than a F-15E/B-1B/B-52 to use.

    C-45 ?? No way, there’s no place in todays USAF for a variant of the Beech 18 :-o

    Well if the Marines can stick missiles and guns on a KC-130, why not a 737? With a permissive threat environment, it’ll be fine I’m sure.

    Nah, wrong way ’round Boeing!

    KC-X should be the base for both the JSTARS and the AWACS replacement. A 737 base is just too small in every respect.

    And while we are at it: Write a long-range loitering COIN aux-bomber for uncontested airspace and a BMD boost-phase interceptor carrier requirement into KC-X! And use the same large canoe fairing as for the JSTARS antenna for a clip-on weapons bay.

    That is a very interesting post, Patents are needed for all new technology. If you come up with something be sure to get a patent on it or you may just have your technology copied.The Visto Philosophy mimics The Real Networks Philosophy… “When you can’t sell your products on your own, just sue anyone else that does the job better.”
