VIDEO: Happy 50th anniversary to the Harrier

I spent a nice chunk of my weekend writing a 50th anniversary tribute feature on the Harrier for next week’s Festive Issue in Flight International. It was a nice treat to see that BAE Systems today posted an excellent tribute video on YouTube, celebrating first flight of the Hawker P.1127 Harrier on 17 November 1960.

As a young boy, I was privileged to be allowed to sit in the cockpit of the P1127 at Farnborough during the annual air show, I think, in 1968 (could be one or two years off) with Bill Bedford being my host. He was kind and generous with his time. I still remember it vividly because I knew it was such a different aircraft. Aviation memories are made with experiences likes this. John Falk

How ironic that soon the UK will be out of the STOVL business.

We don’t consider BAE an American company in many contract instances. The UK still has it’s finger in the STOVL business. The “Bee” model Lightnings will be flying over the UK, but perhaps as US Marines on deployment.

Hmm, so they did an excellent job of this 50 years ago, without the benefit of today’s computer technology, improved materials, etc.

What on earth is going on with the f-35…?
