Monday’s announcement that long-term Cassidian (and previously EADS Defence and Security) chief executive Stefan Zoller had left his post was a big surprise. And coming just over one week before the ILA Berlin Air Show’s opening day, the timing was also unfortunate.
Replaced by formerly chief operating officer Bernhard Gerwert with immediate effect, Zoller “decided to leave EADS in order to pursue new professional challenges”, the parent company says.
Claims of recent tension between Zoller and EADS boss Tom Enders over organisational matters were aired in the German press after the news emerged, and the parent company’s decision earlier this year to kill off his beloved Talarion unmanned air system programme (Cassidian image below) was perhaps another factor.
It will be interesting to see whether Cassidian takes a change of direction under Gerwert. I’m pretty sure that his press briefings will be a bit tamer than his predecessor’s though, having watched Zoller passionately argue the case for Talarion on several occasions.
