Today, Pratt & Whitney delivered the last of 507 F119 engines to the US Air Force. The F119, as most of you are undoubtedly aware, powers the Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor. One USAF engineer working on Raptor told me that in his personal opinion, “The F119 is the single best fighter engine ever built.”
Indeed, in many ways, the F119 makes the F-22 the lethal air-to-air killer that it is, and it is the only aircraft I’ve heard of where the pilots don’t complain about wanting more power. In fact, as one F-22 pilot told me a couple of years back, when flying the Raptor, one has to be careful when using the afterburner or “you might break the jet” by over-speeding the airframe.
Pratt & Whitney made this tribute video for their engine. Enjoy.
