Pratt & Whitney delivers last Raptor engine

Today, Pratt & Whitney delivered the last of 507 F119 engines to the US Air Force. The F119, as most of you are undoubtedly aware, powers the Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor. One USAF engineer working on Raptor told me that in his personal opinion, “The F119 is the single best fighter engine ever built.”

120105-F-PB632-046-v2.jpgIndeed, in many ways, the F119 makes the F-22 the lethal air-to-air killer that it is, and it is the only aircraft I’ve heard of where the pilots don’t complain about wanting more power. In fact, as one F-22 pilot told me a couple of years back, when flying the Raptor, one has to be careful when using the afterburner or “you might break the jet” by over-speeding the airframe.
