Google Starts Displaying Flight Search Results

| | Comments (0) | TrackBacks (0)
Taking its journey to world domination global ambitions one step further, the internet giant Google has now begun displaying flight search data for its search results.

flights from London to New York - Google Search.png
An example search result for Flights from London to New York

To get a flight search listing, all you have to do is searching for "Flights from (city) to (city) " and Google will display the flight schedule data on top of your search page.

The flight duration displayed is an average of all flights and can sometimes display a longer duration than normal. The listings also list flights from LCCs and provide with a link to the airline's online homepage, thus probably benefiting the airlines. This should especially help airlines like Ryanair which has been fighting to get all online sales to be routed via its own website.

The new feature is an achievement from Google's acquisition of ITA last year. The acquisition was met with strong opposition from most existing flight search engines and online travel agencies. And that opposition now seems to be proving true, given that Google's display of flights schedules at the top of its result page will stop anyone from scrolling down further along the search results page for a third party flight search site.

It will be interesting to see how Google's entry into the flight search space will affect the incumbents and the industry in the future.

easyJet Launches New Campaign Against the APD

| | Comments (0) | TrackBacks (0)
easyJet, the UK registered LCC, has launched a new campaign against a proposed rise to the UK Air Passenger Duty. Titled, "Tax Planes, Not People", the carrier asks the government to change the APD tax to a per-aircraft basis from its present per-passenger basis.

Get your name on the plane

The carrier has launched a new website, taxplanesnotpeople.com, to raise awareness about the issue. And easyJet makes some interesting points too..

- The tax is charged per-passenger. Hence an airline like easyJet, that operates in an all economy configuration, has to pay more tax than a legacy carrier flying the same airplane with less seats. The carrier also argues that while carrying more passengers in an all economy configuration, it generates less emissions per-passenger than a two-class operator operating the same airplane model.

- The airline argues that charging the same amount despite the type of aircraft used too, is unfair. It argues that an airline flying an older, less environment friendly aircraft will pay just the same as an airline flying a modern fuel-efficient aircraft.

- easyJet argues that the present mileage band calculation of the APD is unfair as well. The present systems calculates the tax based on the distance to the destination country's capital ( not the destination city ) from London. This makes someone flying to Los Angeles in the USA, pay the same tax as to one who flies to Washington DC, while the former generates far more emissions. While on comparison, someone flying to a city such as Bridgetown in Barbados will pay a higher tax owing to the higher mileage and closer distance to the capital in the small country.

Overall, it makes for an interesting reading and the airline also offers the viewers the ability to sign a petition and get their names printed on a plane.

SriLankan May Launch Flights to Canada

| | Comments (0) | TrackBacks (0)
UPDATE: The airline has confirmed to The Networker that it will not be launching its own service to Canada, but instead code-share.

SriLankan Airlines has long been planning to operate flights into Toronto, Canada. The airline wanted to operate these flights via London, and they recently received fifth freedom approval from the UK authorities for flights between UK and Canada. However, there has been no official indication on this route from the airline so far. The Sri Lankan Minister of Civil Aviation has today commented that SriLankan, which is state owned, would be launching daily flights to Toronto via London Heathrow In October. And for a different reason altogether, now it seems that this comment in fact is true.

800px-Srilankan_a340-300_4r-adf_arp.jpg

The Canadian Transport Agency ( CTA ) has, on 20th May, issued an extra-bilateral authority, to Air Canada for
a temporary licence to operate, through code sharing, an international air service on a scheduled basis, using large aircraft, between Canada and Sri Lanka.

This would mean that Air Canada would be operating a code-share flight to Sri Lanka on board another carrier. And this other carrier could only mean SriLankan as no other Sri Lanka based carrier is presently contemplating flying to Canada.
If this becomes true, it could for sure be a serious competition to Emirates which is sourcing a majority of traffic from the Indian sub-continent presently limited to just three weekly flights to Canada.

This could all end up to be just a simple code-share of the two airlines that will connect each other at London Heathrow. But nevertheless, it would be a very interesting subject to watch.

The Networker Lessons #3 : GDS

| | Comments (0) | TrackBacks (0)
I am sure that you have heard the word GDS plenty of times when discussing about airlines. What does GDS mean? What can it do? Let's find out.

GDS is the acronym for Global Distribution System. A GDS enables an airline to sell its tickets via travel agents.
The GDS evolved from the concept of the CRS ( Computer Reservation System ). As airlines expanded their reach globally, the CRSes had to too. The answer was the GDS.

GDSes are owned by large corporations or groups of airlines and act as the cornerstone of the flight booking process between airlines and the travel agencies. The airline uploads its flight details ( available seats, fare classes etc. ) to the GDS and the travel agency can then use these data to book its customers on those flights.

GDSes usually consist of four layers:
 1. Inventory display and management
 2. Pricing and fare search engines
 3. Ticketing and document generators
 4. Database reporting engines

Some of the most popular GDSes are Sabre, Amadeus and Galileo.

Low cost carriers generally do not use GDSes and instead rely on their own methods to sell tickets, in order to save on the distribution costs. With the advent of the LCCs and their solely web based flight booking, the GDSes have been threatened too. This is lead by the fact that the web based systems save the airlines a lot of money that would have otherwise been spent on travel agency commissions via the GDS. However, the GDS' ability to reach regions with low internet penetration has helped the GDSes retain their leading position.

The GDS remains a critical part to any airline's operation.

SIA to Set Up Long Haul LCC Subsidiary

| | Comments (0) | TrackBacks (0)
Singapore Airlines today announced its plans to launch a new low cost long haul carrier. The new subsidiary, to be wholly owned by SIA, will be managed independently. The airline stated that "The new airline is being established following extensive review and analysis. It will enable the SIA Group to serve a largely untapped new market and cater to the growing demand among consumers for low-fare travel,"
The new subsidiary will be based in Singapore and will begin operations within an year.
Aircraft will be initially sourced from the parent company, but they will keep all options open. The routes on which the new carrier will operate is not clear, but will likely operate on lower yielding routes paving way for better yield for SIA.
The new move will surely give some competition to the home-based Jetstar Asia and neighboring Malaysia's AirAsia X.
SIA already operates a short-haul affiliate, SilkAir. which operates Airbus A320 family aircraft.

Back in August 2010, All Nippon Airways announced its plans to launch a low cost carrier. This new LCC, to be based in Osaka, was first called A&F Aviation - till it gets a name. This new LCC has now received its proper name - Peach. Aligning with the new brand, the holding company too would be renamed into Peach Aviation Ltd.

Lufthansa, effective Winter 2011/12 will be terminating service to Hyderabad, HYD. The German carrier presently operates thrice weekly Frankfurt - Hyderabad flights. Poor loads are believed to be the reason for the cancellation. There is only very little O&D traffic between Hyderabad and Germany, and LH's flights were almost entirely dependent on connecting traffic.

The eruption of the Grímsvötn volcano in Iceland has caused European air travel to be affected again. While expected to be as not bad as the situation last time, there are still significant flight cancellations expected.
The approach this time around is for airlines to cancel their flights based on their own safety risk assessments, rather than a blanket closure, like was the case last time.
Here is a handy dandy list of various airlines' operational updates list to keep you up-to-date with the flight cancellations. Always contact your airline before you fly, as delays and extra cancellations are inevitable.

Flight cancellations, and operational updates list

Lufthansa today announced that it will be closing down its Lufthansa Italia subsidiary. The airline launched Lufthansa Italia in 2008.
The subsidiary, which was launched to fill the gap left by Alitalia's concentration on Rome, will close down its operations on 29th October 2011. The A319s presently operated by Lufthansa Italia will be utilized elsewhere on the Lufthansa network.
Some of the routes presently operated by Lufthansa Italia will be taken over by Air Dolomiti, another Lufthansa subsidiary. Some other routes will be connected via Lufthansa's present hubs. Lufthansa cites commercial reasons for the closure.
Air Dolomiti at present operates five Embraer E-195s and 11 ATR72s. Lufthansa Italia presently operates eight Airbus A319s, configured with 12 Business Class seats and 120 Economy Class seats. Lufthansa Italia presently operates to 17 destinations in 9 countries, while Air Dolomiti operates to 16 destinations in two countries.
The full PR text is below.

Lufthansa and Air Dolomiti will take over role of the Lufthansa Italia brand - Air Dolomiti to expand route network

Frankfurt / Milan, 23 May 2011 - Lufthansa is reshaping its presence in the Italian market in order to focus on its strong position there. To that end, Lufthansa's current alignment in Italy with its core brand Lufthansa, Lufthansa Italia and the regional airline Air Dolomiti will be streamlined.

The Lufthansa Italia brand, which was launched in 2008, will only be retained until the end of the summer timetable on 29 October 2011. The Airbus A319 aircraft currently operated by Lufthansa Italia will be deployed elsewhere within the Lufthansa Group from the start of the 2011/2012 winter timetable. At the same time, Lufthansa foresees double-digit growth in its offering to Italy, which it already serves frequently from its Frankfurt and Munich hubs. Air Dolomiti will also increase flight frequencies to Germany in its route network, which focuses on connecting the major economic centres in Northern Italy with Lufthansa's Munich base. Together, Lufthansa and Air Dolomiti currently serve 19 destinations in Italy.

Lufthansa CEO and Chairman Christoph Franz: "Bundling our services under the Lufthansa and Air Dolomiti brands will give us a clearer and more streamlined presence in the Italian market. When we launched Lufthansa Italia three years ago, we filled a gap that had emerged in Milan following Alitalia's withdrawal from Malpensa and the end of our cooperation with Air One. Our service is highly appreciated and the response from passengers in Italy is excellent. However, given the slump in prices on European routes and the competition, it was extremely difficult to establish a profitable European network under a separate brand. It therefore makes sense to focus the Lufthansa Group's offering on connecting the connecting the Italian market to the Group's hubs.

Lufthansa Executive Board member Carsten Spohr, who is responsible for Lufthansa's passenger business, commented: "We are the most successful foreign airline in Italy and we want to consolidate our position. By shifting capacities from Lufthansa Italia to our core brand Lufthansa and strengthening Air Dolomiti, we will be able to offer our customers an even higher quality network of services via our hubs. The link between 'Lufthansa' and 'Italia' will remain as close as it has been up to now." Michael Kraus, CEO and President of Air Dolomiti will be responsible for realigning Lufthansa's and Air Dolomiti's presence in the North Italian market.

Thomas Eggert took over as Sales Director in Milan on 15 April 2011. An experienced airline manager, he began his career at Lufthansa more than 20 years ago in Milan, at that time in Lufthansa's Cargo division. Since then, he has held various positions within the Lufthansa Group in Asia and Europe. Prior to taking up his current appointment he was Head of Corporate Development at Lufthansa Cargo in Frankfurt.

Emirates Gives Up on Canada, for now

Emirates Airline has decided to take a short break from its never ending battle for more landing rights in Canada.
"We respect the 'umpire's decision' and I think we are just of the view that we are very comfortable letting some time pass."
said Andrew Parker, a senior vice president of international affairs at Emirates, with TheNational.

Thumbnail image for 800px-Emirates.a330-200.a6-eks.arp.jpg

The United Arab Emirates is limited to just six weekly flights to Canada, of which three is utilized by Etihad, leaving Emirates with just three weekly flights. The airline has been battling to get more rights into Canada, a market for which it has great demand from the Indian sub-continent, however has been refused any extra rights by Canadian prime minister Stephen Harper's government. Emirates' expansion plans have also been opposed by Air Canada, reportedly over the threat Emirates poses to the former's long-haul revenue, although AC does not serve the Middle East or the Indian sub-continent.

The battle for landing rights has gone as far as the UAE asking a Canadian army camp to leave the UAE and Canada awarding new landing rights to Emirates' prime competitor Qatar Airways. With the Harper government re-elected for another four years, Emirates must have thought of getting a short break with hopes of entering into a fresh round of talks, sooner than later.

Emirates was also refused by the German authorities from getting rights to serve Berlin and Stuttgart in Germany, last week.

In an interview with Luchtvaart Nieuws, KLM CEO Mr. Peter Hartman has stated that the carrier is planning to launch flights to Rio De Janeiro ( GIG ), Brazil, from the next Winter season.
The carrier expects to cut capacity on some routes, which should reveal how the airline will be bringing in the aircraft capacity needed for this route. Mr. Hartman has stated that KLM will be using more smaller aircraft on routes to North America, possibly signalling the deployment of more A330 capacity to North America.
It is expected that the airline will launch a daylight service to Rio, initially operating thrice weekly.

Rio De Janeiro has recently seen a surge in capacity with Lufthansa launching a new service and British Airways doubling capacity.

Arik Air receives approval for Houston flights

Arik Air of Nigeria, recently received approval from the US DoT to operate flights to Houston, however the airlines viability remains an issue.
The airline recently announced the Houston route on its Facebook page. The airline is likely to route the flights via New York JFK, operating as Lagos - New York - Houston - Lagos.
However, the airline has recently had its Airbus A330-200 5N-EIA repossessed by the lessor ( Amentum Capital ) and has apparently also had one of its Boeing 737-700s repossessed.
With all of these incidents, it will be interesting to see whether Arik will go ahead with this route - but The Networker wishes them well nevertheless.

The Networker Lessons #2 : Equipment

| | Comments (0) | TrackBacks (0)
Welcome to the second chapter of The Networker lessons. I'm sure that you have often heard the word equipment when talking about an airline route. What is an equipment ? Let's find out.
The equipment refers to the equipment type - or vehicle - that is used to operate a particular flight. This is not strictly about an aircraft, it could range from a jet aircraft to a helicopter to a road vehicle.
Equipment codes are used to identify different equipment types used. While there are some standard codes, airlines too are free to use any codes that they wish, to distinguish one aircraft from another. An example for this is Cathay Pacific - Cathay Pacific operates the Airbus A330-300, in multiple seating configurations. Hence, while the standard code for the Airbus A330-300 is 333, Cathay Pacific uses 33B for one of its different seating configurations, in order to distinguish it from the other A330-300s in its fleet.
Some of the most popular IATA equipment codes are provided below ( IATA codes, with three letters are used in the reservation systems and are the most popular. There are also ICAO codes, which consist of four letters. )

32S - Airbus A320 family aircraft ( A318/A319/A320/A321 )
AB6 - Airbus A300-600
332 - Airbus A330-200
333 - Airbus A330-300
343 - Airbus A340-300
388 - Airbus A380-800

Air Zimbabwe IATA membership suspended

| | Comments (0) | TrackBacks (0)
IATA has suspended the membership of the Zimbabwean national carrier Air Zimbabwe ( IATA: UM ) following unsettled debts.
This will stop Air Zimbabwe from using IATA's flight booking and finance services, a critical part in making bookings via travel agents. The amount of unpaid debts are $280,000.
The airline has stated that it has already engaged IATA to negotiate the settlement of debts.
Air New Zealand and Virgin Australia, which late last year received approval for a trans-Tasman joint network, has announced that the joint operations will commence from Winter 2011 ( effective 30th October ).
The two airlines will be connecting each others domestic points with ANZ operating 70% of the trans-Tasman flights and Virgin Australia ( under Pacific Blue ) the remaining 30%.
The two airlines will adjust flight times on some sectors while there will be transferring of capacity between the two airlines where necessary.

Wellington - Brisbane : Pacific Blue will increase its servces to twice daily from the present four-weekly

Christchurch - Brisbane : Combined twice daily flights

Queenstown - Sydney : Combined five-times weekly service. Previously both airlines operated twice weekly, on same days of the week.

Wellington - Sydney : ANZ will operate twice daily services.

Pacific Blue will be taking over ANZ's services connecting Dunedin with Sydney and Melbourne.

ANZ will be taking over the Auckland - Cairns route.

Total capacity out of Wellington will increase by 3.5% while Christchurch will see a reduction of about 14% to match the reduced demand following the recent earthquake.

There are also numerous other capacity adjustmnets.

Air Astana logo

The airline plans to add the cities of Shanghai, Singapore, Hong Kong and Colombo to its network, with a stated goal of expanding its fleet to fifty aircraft by 2020. It also wants to be flying to Milan, Munich, Prague, Paris as well as China and Japan by 2020, while the Kazakh government wants to see the airline commencing nonstop service to the US.
The airline is also expecting to enter into talks with Aerosvit, the Ukrainian national carrier, regarding possible joint operations.
The national carrier of Kazhakstan, presently operates a fleet of 23 aircraft consisting of Airbus A320 family, Boeing 757-200s, Boeing 767-300ERs, Embraer 190s and Fokker 50s. It is owned by Samruk-Kazyna ( 51% ), the sovereign wealth fund of Kazakhstan, and BAE Systems ( 49% ).

Czech Airlines to Open Base at Bratislava

According to a report on The Slovak Spectator, CSA Czech Airlines will be launching a new base at Bratislava, Slovakia's main airport, as early as next June.

800px-Csa_b737-400_ok-dgm_arp.jpg

The airline will be operating the following roster of flights from its new Bratislava base
Paris - Daily
Rome - five times a week
Amsterdam - four times a week
Brussels - three times a week
Larnaca - three times a week
Barcelona - twice weekly

The airline already flies between Prague and Bratislava.

map

From the looks of the proposed flying programme, it seems that the airline will be basing one aircraft - likely an Airbus A319/A320 or a Boeing 737-500 - to operate the 24 weekly frequencies. The airline will not be facing any competition on any of the routes.

The ticket sales are expected to open by 17th May.

According to the European open skies deal, airlines from European Union member countries are allowed to open bases in other EU member countries - however this has been only very rarely utilized by a full fare carrier while LCCs like RyanAir and easyJet have actively been setting up foreign bases.

Slovakia has been lacking a national carrier ever since Air Slovakia, and then SkyEurope Airlines, went bankrupt during the recent worldwide recession. In an interesting twist of events, the former Československé Státní Aerolinie will now be again serving both Czech and Slovakia.

Delta Air Lines, effective 17th June will be suspending its flights to Kiev indefinitely. The airline presently serves Kiev from New York, JFK. The move is likely a part of the airline's cost cutting initiative. The airline will continue to offer code-share service to Kiev via Paris and Amsterdam.

The competition to this route comes from Aerosvit Airlines which operates a five times weekly service between New York JFK and Kiev.
Lufthansa from 31st October 2011, is launching flights to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, from Munich. The new flight will be operating as a tag on flight to its present Riyadh flight, which will see an upgrade from PrivatAir 737 to the airline's own Airbus A340-300 aircraft.

SriLankan Airlines has announced that it will be launching new flights to Moscow, Russia, from 15th September. The new flights will operate twice weekly on-board Airbus A320 aircraft, via Dubai. The airline had previously planned to operate thrice weekly via Abu Dhabi, on board Airbus A330-200 aircraft, but later brought forward the flights.

The airline will have full fifth freedom rights between Dubai and Moscow. The new route is to be operated with the airline's new fleet of factory fresh Airbus A320 aircraft, which will be configured with 20 Business Class seats and 120 Economy Class seats ( the airline's present A320s are configured 12J/138Y ). However it remains to be seen what would be the customer response for staying in an A320 for 10hrs. But it is very likely that the airline is after the DXB-MOW traffic which alone could fill the A320 with UL's lower fares.

 The schedule is as follows

UL531 CMB 0730 - 1030 DXB 1130 - 1640 DME 320 Thu, Sat
UL532 DME 1800 - 2300 DXB 0001+1 - 0600+1 CMB 320 Thu, Sat

The competition to the new route is as follows

Emirates - DXB-DME twice daily 345 and 77W
Aeroflot - SVO-CMB twice weekly 763, SVO-DXB 16 weekly 320 and IL9

The new SriLankan flights ensure optimal connectivity to its Indian sub-continent and South East Asian destinations and the airline has also loaded a new Male flight, UL111/2, from Winter - to join its already 30+ strong weekly Male flights.

SriLankan is also planning to add at least one more European destination prior to the end of 2011.

What will happen if IAG takes over TAP ?

Recently there was an article in the UK's Sunday Times that the International Airline Group ( which consists of British Airways and Iberia ) was preparing a bid to take over TAP Portugal.
While this article itself should be taken with a grain of salt, this appears to be something plausible for a number of reasons.
1. Portugal has been asked to privatize TAP Portugal as part of the country's multi-billion Euro bailout.
2. IAG is known to have prepared a list of takeover targets.

But what will happen to TAP's network, and the European competitive landscape if this deal takes place ?

The biggest strength in the TAP route network is without a doubt its extensive South American network. A possible IAG takeover of TAP, and an upcoming LAN + TAM merger ( LATAM ) in the other side of the pond will radically change the present competition in the South America - Europe market.

A merger of the both sides ( IAG and LATAM ) will drive IAG and LATAM into dominant positions in this particular market and will likely cause an increase of the fares on these routes. This happens as both groups will then be trying to achieve the best possible synergies in terms of yield optimization.

Will the EC let an IAG takeover of TAP go through ? This is an interesting, and perhaps the most important, question. The EC is known to be considering the competition in specific markets and routes prior to giving approval to a merger. This is further evident by the recent mergers the EC approved and rejected.

Lufthansa takeover of SWISS - The merger was approved and the airlines were only asked to give back some of their FRA and ZRH slots.

Aegean merger with Olympic - The merger was rejected because this would have considerably hurt the competition in the Greek market.

While looking at these decisions, one could argue that the EC did not consider the competition in the North Atlantic market ( where both Lufthansa and SWISS are very good ) and that the acquisitions of Brussels Airlines, bmi and SWISS have brought Lufthansa into a dominant position in Central Europe.

But that itself could hurt Lufthansa as that is, at present, the only reason the EC could reject a Lufthansa takeover bid for TAP Portugal. And it seems that Lufthansa has a better chance at it, as the Lufthansa group's south American network is not as strong as that of the IAG's.

However, if none of the above take-overs get accepted, there remains to be one very strong candidate - AF-KLM. The Air France + KLM group at present does not own any other leading European airlines and nor will its takeover hurt the South America - Europe market as much as an IAG takeover will.

With such an interesting list of consequences, it will be very interesting to see what will happen to a TAP Portugal takeover bid in the future.

US Airways Reveals A350 Configuration

Thanks to my friend Steven Frischling for bringing this to my attention - it seems that US Airways has revealed its Airbus A350 configuration.

Airbus A350

 A350-800 - 36 Envoy Class / 234 Economy Class
 A350-900 - 36 Envoy Class / 294 Economy Class

The airline has 18 A350-800 aircraft and 4 A350-900 aircraft on order for delivery from 2017 onwards.
The US Airways present A330-200 has 20 Envoy Class seats and 238 Economy Class seats.
The A350 will have 16 extra Envoy Class seats while the A350-800, with 234 Economy Class seats will have just four Economy Class seats less than the A332. The A350-800's cabin length is almost identical to the A330-200. The A350-900, which is about two metres longer than the A330-300 in cabin length will seat 6 more Envoy and 31 more Economy passengers over the airline's present A330-300 configuration ( 30 J / 263 Y ).
