germanwings replacing Lufthansa on Cologne – LHR service

Lufthansa, from 25th March, appears to be replacing its Cologne – London Heathrow service with low cost subsidiary germanwings service. The LCC will take over all three of LH’s daily frequencies and will operate the flights with Airbus A319 aircraft, same as the type used by LH at present – albeit with a larger economy class. This is another example of European network carriers’ pressing need to make their short haul networks profitable, in this case by replacing a high CASK service with a considerably lower CASK service albeit at a little loss of RASK.

It should be noted however that the flights are not using the same slots as the LH service except for 4U468/9.
