AeroSur ceases operations

Bolivia’s largest airline, AeroSur, ceased operations on 31st March. Although it is believed that the reason was financial performance, it is also being rumoured that a political pressure led it.

AeroSur, bearing the IATA code 5L and the ICAO code RSU was launched in 1992. The airline was based at the Viru Viru International Airport in Santa Cruz de la Sierra and operated a fleet of 9 aircraft at the time of closure. The airline was also believed to be the only operator of passenger 727 service as of 2012, in South America. With the demise of AeroSur, Bolivia loses its only trans-continental connections to Europe and North America.
