Astraeus Ceases Operations

| | Comments (0) | TrackBacks (0)
British ACMI and charter carrier Astraeus Airlines yesterday ceased operations. The airline has went into administration and all flying will be halted and employees have been laid off. The airline's Hugh Parry in a memo to the employees, said

It is with great sadness that I must advise you that Astraeus Airlines has ceased operations with immediate effect. The Board of Directors met this morning and concluded that with little visibility on start dates for proposed winter contracts, the forecast losses during the winter period were simply too great to allow Astraeus to continue in business. The board has resolved to place Astraeus into administration today. Mr Nick Cropper of Zolfo Cooper will be appointed in due course and will contact each member of staff.
This news will come as a great shock to many of you, and I appreciate that by this point in this note your thoughts are turning - quite correctly - to your own future. However, I have nevertheless set out below a very brief history of the recent events that have led to this decision.
As you know, I was the founding CEO of Astraeus and left the company in December 2007 at the point when it had started the transition from charter to ACMI business. The ACMI world is a challenging one and is best served through long-term year-round contracts which avoid the seasonal peaks and troughs of the standard leisure market.
The start of the Astraeus ACMI model encapsulated the best of these aims with contracts with bmi, Ghana International, Palmair, Trawel and ,of course, Iceland Express. Unfortunately for Astraeus, and in keeping with the difficult economic climate, these long-term contracts disappeared one by one leaving only Iceland Express as a long term client.
It is true to say that we had a very successful summer operations-wise with Thomas Cook and Thomson, and both were keen to work with us again next year. However, these are summer-only contracts and this leaves a difficult winter period to negotiate. This was not helped by the Icelandic summer season which is somewhat shorter than the traditional UK charter market adding to the stress of winter placements.
The summer 2011 season was also severely impacted by operational issues on the IEX and MOD contracts. Whether through crew shortages, or engines requiring shop visits halfway through the expected normal lifetime, the fact remains that costs outstripped revenue during the key summer months so we did not have the usual cash reserves required to take us through the lean winter months.
When I was asked by Palmi to rejoin Astraeus on 19th October 2011 it was on the basis that the company's immediate financial needs had been recently met by a £5m funding injection (taking his overall investment in Astraeus to £25m) and that the future commercial outlook was strong. Regrettably, the expected contracts in Asia, South America and the Middle East failed to materialise on a timely basis and directly led to today's announcement.
This was clearly not the position I expected when I returned to Astraeus and it is of great personal sadness that today I have to close down the company that I started almost 10 years ago. A bright future was just around the corner, but sometimes we are not blessed with the luxury of time to achieve that goal.
It only remains for me to place on record my sincere thanks to all our fantastic staff, who have given so much to the company in good times and troubled times. I wish you all the best for the future wherever it may take you and I am just so sorry that it did not work out the way we had all hoped.
Hugh Parry

Malaysia Airlines network restructuring in early 2012

| | Comments (0) | TrackBacks (0)
UPDATE AS OF 1037 GMT 11NOV - MAS has reopened these routes for reservation.

Malaysia Airlines, which kept a long silence after its share swap deal with AirAsia, has revealed a major network restructuring beginning in early 2012. The restructuring sees MAS cancelling a number of loss making routes, axing its Kota Kinbalu hub, as well as reducing frequencies on some other routes.

Highlights of the restructuring are as follows.

  • Kota Kinbalu removed from hub status. BKI - Seoul Incheon and BKI - Tokyo Haneda to be cancelled.
  • Dubai - All flights cancelled from 13th January 2012. MH162/3 ( 3 weekly, 332 ) KUL - Dubai nonstop flight is cancelled from 15th November 2011, while MH160/1 (2xW, 330) KUL - Karachi - Dubai service gets terminated from 1st December 2011. MH154/5 (2xW, 330) KUL - Dubai - Dammam service will finally cease on 13th January 2012. On another note, Emirates Airline is beginning Airbus A380 service into KUL from 1st January 2012.
  • According to the above, service to Karachi and Dammam too, will be cancelled from the same dates.
  • MH203/4 (3xW, 772) KUL - Johannesburg service suspended from 1st February 2012.
  • MH201/2 (2xW, 744) KUL - Cape Town - Buenos Aires service suspended from 1st February 2012. The cancellation of this route is quite significant as the carrier held on to this route even during worst economic periods in Argentina. However the route must have suffered from the regulatory hurdles which limited it to a twice weekly only service.
  • Beginning 2nd July 2012, the airline will be launching Airbus A380 service to London Heathrow on flight MH002/3. Initially operating thrice weekly, it will increase to daily from 15th August 2012.
  • It is also expected that the airline will launch flights to Abu Dhabi, soon.

This sees Malaysia Airlines becoming a four-continent airline and is another airline leaving the six-continent club.
Hong Kong Airlines today announced its long awaited all premium class service on the Hong Kong - London route.
Dubbed "Hong Kong Airlines Club", the service will operate daily between Hong Kong and London Gatwick. The airline will operate specially configured Airbus A330-200 aircraft with 34 Club Premier (Business class) seats and 82 Club Classic (Premium Economy class) seats.

The service launches on 7th March 2012, and will operate on the following schedule

HX875 HKG 2350 - 0555+1 LGW 330 D
HX876 LGW 2130 - 1805+1 HKG 330 D

Reservation for this route is already open. The airline's new website dedicated for this service could be found here.
