Allegiant to Lease A319s for Expansion

Allegiant Air, the US low cost tour operator, today announced that it has entered into agreements with GE Capital Aviation Services (GECAS) and Cebu Pacific Air to lease and purchase nineteen Airbus A319 aircraft to aid its expansion plans.

Airbus A319 aircraft

Out of its key hubs the A319 offers a range of up to 6,850km - significantly more than Allegiant's fleet mainstay the MD-80 and also more seating capacity.

Out of the nineteen A319s, nine would be purchased from GECAS while another ten would be purchased from Cebu Pacific Air. The GECAS aircraft would be ex-easyJet. The aircraft will be configured with 156 seats and will be of the four-exit doors variant. The first of these A319s would be operational by the 1st quarter of 2013. Deliveries are planned to run till 2015.

The airline expects that the A319 will offer 25% better fuel economics and 40% lower maintenance costs per block hour, over the MD-80 family. It also expects to capitalize on the market opportunity with lower acquisition costs as the A320neo and 737 MAX families depress older vintage aircraft' market values - while other airlines' tendency to move away from smaller A319 size aircraft to larger aircraft also contribute to a lower lease rental.

The A319 on average is set to deliver a $10 lower block hour cost over the MD-80, per Allegiant's estimates.

Allegiant presently operates a fleet of 58 MD-80 family aircraft and four Boeing 757-200s.

While the first cities to be served by the A319s or any new destinations have not yet been announced - it seems to be a strategy that is perfectly supporting Allegiant's proven business model. The A319s from Cebu Pacific, a low cost carrier, would have likely accumulated high cycles and will have an affordable market price allowing Allegiant to purchase them outright without investing too much capital - while the leases would allow us to keep its cash flow strong; both of which will allow it to keep its costs low while offering competitive fares as well as tour packages. The airline followed a similar path when it ordered its MD-80 family aircraft.

Comair to cease operations

In line with its earlier announced intention to reduce regional flying, Delta Air Lines today announced that it will be ceasing the operations of its Comair unit on 29th September.

Don Bornhost, Delta's SVP of Delta Connection stated "While regional flying has and
will remain a key component
of Delta's network, customer
expectations and the unit
costs of regional flying have
evolved. In response, Delta
recently announced its plans
to reduce the total number of
regional jets in its network
while adding more mainline
flying. This includes reducing
the number of 50-seat
regional jets from nearly 350
aircraft to 125 or fewer in the
upcoming years. As a result of
this reduction and changes to
its customer-focused business
strategy, Delta has made the
difficult decision to cease
Comair's operations."

Comair is a wholly owned subsidiary of Delta, and was founded in 1977 in Cincinatti. It became a Delta Connection carrier in 1984, and Delta first acquired a stake in the carrier in 1986. It fully took over Comair in 1999.
Comair presently operates an all Bombardier CRJ fleet consisting mostly of 50-seater CRJ100ERs, a type known for undesirable unit costs in today's market environment.

Delta to suspend Winter service to Istanbul

Delta Air Lines has announced that it will be suspending its New York - Istanbul service in Winter 2012 season. The airline had planned to operate this route five times per week throughout the Winter season - but will now instead suspend it from 17th November onwards.
Delta's exit from this route appears to be driven by high competition, on this route connecting to a rival Star Alliance hub where there is little feed for SkyTeam.

Emirates is well known to be bucking the trends and growing through a recession - and the Middle Eastern connectivity giant seems not even lightly fazed by the economic crisis. The mega carrier has just announced its expansion into three strategically important destinations, building on its momentum of recent A380 upgrades to Moscow and Paris.

Emirates' latest expansion portfolio includes Adelaide in Australia, Lyon in France and Warsaw in Poland - the latter already predicted by The Networker in January.

 Adeliade, ADL - Australia
The South Australian city has been an omission from the Emirates' network for a long time - and Emirates seems keen to fill the gap in the face of increased emphasis into Down Under from its two Middle Eastern rivals - Etihad and Qatar. Emirates' Adelaide flights will start on 1st November, with four weekly flights and on board a Boeing 777-300ER - somewhat unusual for a new route and which itself proves the strategic importance which this route holds for Emirates. The service would then be increased to daily effective 1st February 2013. The aircraft choice and the expansion plan signals its incumbent Adelaide competitors such as Cathay Pacific, Malaysia Airlines and Singapore Airlines that they well be prepared for an impending price war for connections out of Europe and the Middle Eastern regions.

 Lyon, LYS - France
Somewhat the 'odd-kid' in the list, but perhaps the least surprising to long-time observers of EK's network strategy, the addition of this eastern France destination signals the next phase of Emirates' network development. The medium-sized French airport, Lyon, that had been long ignored by Air France had been very keen to bring in a long haul carrier that will offer it a wide-array of connections beyond Europe.A fierce battle fought with some of the other regional airports finally sees Lyon claiming the victory of the first French regional airport to secure a long haul airline. And it is not without mutual benefits to Emirates either - Lyon presents a high yielding market with a very good long term potential to build on. And clearly reflecting the very intentions, Emirates will be launching service on 5th December with a five times weekly Airbus A340-500 service. Lyon will become Emirates' third destination in France, after Paris and Nice.

 Warsaw, WAW - Poland
A much anticipated addition to the Emirates' route portfolio, this more vibrant European economy symbolizes Emirates next expansion phase - niche secondary destinations to build a long term presence in. The addition of Warsaw also completes an important geographical expansion into Europe for EK, where it now is serving almost all key parts of the continent. Emirates plans for Warsaw seem aggressive and yet very realistic. Its daily service shows its keen intention to develop connections into all parts of its network, while the initial equipment choice of an Airbus A330-200 shows not only that it is not over-estimating the market potential but also that it is willing to capture the lower end of the market with discounted fares. Emirates' outgoing A330 fleet is a very good tool for precisely the same tactic - with a good seat count offering lower unit costs, and a less-modern product suitable for a market that tends to be somewhat lower yielding for the longer hauls. Yet do not surprised to see Emirates upgrade this route to a Boeing 777 in the not-so-distant future. The entry of Emirates' should be treated a considerable risk for LOT Polish Airlines, whose expansion plans into Asia now face a very strong challenge to retain a sustainable fare advantage.

And to add to that, Emirates would also increase its strong presence in Perth to 19 weekly flights - up from the present 14 - effective 1st December. This would then be further increased to three daily flights from 1st March. Emirates has built a solid business case for Perth having well leveraged its first mover advantage and has turned the isolated Western Australian city into a significant source of feed for the rest of its network. The latest expansion plan shows that EK is not willing to loosen that grip and is appearing to be interested in the sustainable path of building the demand, instead of simply adding excessive capacity to stimulate the market through discounted promotional initiatives that will have a short-term impact on the yield of the rest of its network.
