| | Comments (0) | TrackBacks (0)
Air New Zealand today unveiled its latest Boeing 777-300ER, wearing a special All Blacks (the New Zealand Rugby team which won the world cup this year) livery, on Friday. The aircraft was presented for the media by Kieran Read and Andy Ellis, two members of the All Blacks who flew in to Boeing's Paine Field for the ceremony.
According to Boeing, painting of the 777 took over a week - two days longer than it takes for a usual 777 paint job - and used 700 litres of chrome-free paint. Contrary to popular belief, the black colour will not cause in any significant heating to the aircraft, said Air New Zealand.
The new aircraft, ZK-OKQ will enter into service in mid-January. All images, unless stated are copyright of Air New Zealand.

Google Flights Launches

Google has recently launched Google Flights, the outcome of its acquisition of ITA.

( This post includes a number of images. Please click through to view the images in full size.)

Flights from San Francisco - Google Search.png

Upon launching Google Flights, Gogle displays flight options out of a city ( presumably by your current location. I have received SFO probably because I am out of the presently supported region ) with average fares, on a map.

Presently Google Flights provides you with the ability to search U.S domestic flights only, however international flights can be expected soon.

Once you perform a search for a particular route, it provides you with a listing of flights sorted by the time of departure.

When you select one of the flights, you are then asked to select the return flight (given that you book a round-trip)

And then for booking the flight, Google automatically opens your itinerary on the selected airline's official website very conveniently.

Upon further inspection this appeared to be that Google will only open automatic booking for airlines that it partners with ( in this case American ). This is what I received for a flight with a carrier that is not partnering ( means - not advertising with Google Flights ). Or another possibility is that the selected airlines do not interline with each other. It however still lists links to the relevant airline websites.

I am not sure what is the reservation technology used by Google to cooperate with the selected airline's IBE ( please leave a comment if you do ) or about the exact revenue model Google has in mind ( is that via ads displayed for booking the flights ? ). But nevertheless, it surely will make travellers life more easier and should  help airlines to lower their distribution costs too.

Singapore Airlines' new Low Cost Carrier subsidiary, which recently confirmed its plans to use Boeing 777-200s, is now registered as New Aviation Pvt. Ltd. This however is simply the company's name and the actual brand name may vastly differ. Any idea what that new name could be? Share your guesses at the comments section.

The 737 in Gigapixels and a hint of RE

Boeing recently added a new part to its newairplane.com website showcasing a Boeing 737-900ER in gigapixels.

787

Boeing claims that the image is the world's highest resolution image of a 737 aircraft. The 360 interactive view enables users to experience a 737-900ER in real size without going near to an airplane. The image has more than 70 features of the aircraft highlighted, and explained.

747-8

The interactive image could be found here with an article about the gigapixels shoot here.

Interestingly, in the same interactive feature's 737 Explained section, Boeing mentions a potential 737-800RE in a seat-mile cost comparison with the 737-800 Winglets aircraft and the future nearest competitor (A320neo). As per the chart provided, the 737-800RE will have a very high operating cost advantage compared to the A320neo, the latter which is also shown as being outperformed by the present 737-800.

 Worth having a look!

ASA and ExpressJet becomes SureJet

| | Comments (0) | TrackBacks (0)
Atlantic Southeast Airlines and ExpressJet have renamed themselves as SureJet following their merger.

"So where did SureJet come from? Simply put, it came from our people; it's a symbol of the assurance, reliability and trustworthiness that our 10,000 aviation professionals told us they stand for and that our airline is committed to. The new identity also combines elements from each airline's existing brand, such as the red icon from the Atlantic Southeast brand and the forward moving text from the ExpressJet brand"

Says ASA, in its blog post. At the moment, the response for the new brand from some of its employees seem to be deeply disappointing. But let's see how it goes.. After all, they don't paint their name on their planes.

easyJet Launches New Campaign Against the APD

| | Comments (0) | TrackBacks (0)
easyJet, the UK registered LCC, has launched a new campaign against a proposed rise to the UK Air Passenger Duty. Titled, "Tax Planes, Not People", the carrier asks the government to change the APD tax to a per-aircraft basis from its present per-passenger basis.

Get your name on the plane

The carrier has launched a new website, taxplanesnotpeople.com, to raise awareness about the issue. And easyJet makes some interesting points too..

- The tax is charged per-passenger. Hence an airline like easyJet, that operates in an all economy configuration, has to pay more tax than a legacy carrier flying the same airplane with less seats. The carrier also argues that while carrying more passengers in an all economy configuration, it generates less emissions per-passenger than a two-class operator operating the same airplane model.

- The airline argues that charging the same amount despite the type of aircraft used too, is unfair. It argues that an airline flying an older, less environment friendly aircraft will pay just the same as an airline flying a modern fuel-efficient aircraft.

- easyJet argues that the present mileage band calculation of the APD is unfair as well. The present systems calculates the tax based on the distance to the destination country's capital ( not the destination city ) from London. This makes someone flying to Los Angeles in the USA, pay the same tax as to one who flies to Washington DC, while the former generates far more emissions. While on comparison, someone flying to a city such as Bridgetown in Barbados will pay a higher tax owing to the higher mileage and closer distance to the capital in the small country.

Overall, it makes for an interesting reading and the airline also offers the viewers the ability to sign a petition and get their names printed on a plane.

ANA's LCC Gets a Name : Peach

Back in August 2010, All Nippon Airways announced its plans to launch a low cost carrier. This new LCC, to be based in Osaka, was first called A&F Aviation - till it gets a name. This new LCC has now received its proper name - Peach. Aligning with the new brand, the holding company too would be renamed into Peach Aviation Ltd.

The new LCC will commence flights from next March, initially operating to Fukuoka and Sapporo out of Osaka Kansai Airport. Yes, it closely resembles Wizz Air, but let's think that it's pink, ok ? ;-)
