After a long hiatus of decades, Air India will finally be resuming service to Sri Lanka from Summer. The carrier will fly to Colombo from Chennai six times a week starting 27th March.
The service operates with Airbus A321 aircraft.
Schedule below
AI273 MAA 1415 - 1535 CMB x3 321
AI274 CMB 1635 - 1800 MAA x3 321

The airline will face tough competition on the route which is already served with over seven daily flights from Jet Airways, Kingfisher, Spicejet and SriLankan in addition to AI's own Air India Express.SriLankan is the largest operator on the route offering 3293 weekly one-way seats on 15 frequencies.
Air India subsidiary Indian ( soon to come under AI AOC, reported by The Networker on 7/02/11 ) was serving this route till late 2010.

Update: The airline has already begun operating this route as AI1573/4.
SriLankan A330 SriLankan to MoscowSriLankan Airlines, from 23 December 2011, will be launching service to Moscow Domodedovo from Colombo. The service will operate three times weekly ( on Wed, Fri and Sun ) on-board Airbus A330-200 aircraft via Abu Dhabi. The route is already available on reservation systems ( with sales due to open soon). It is one of the routes that UL has ever uploaded to reservation systems with such a long time in advance for the launch, which goes on to show the importance of the carrier's first ever route launch into Russia.

UL531 CMB 0430 - 1400 DME 357 332 ( via AUH )
UL532 DME 1600 - 0405+1 CMB 357 332 ( via AUH )

[ Key: CMB = Colombo Bandaranaike Airport, DME = Moscow Domodedovo Airport, 357= Days of op= Wed, Fri, Sun, 332= Airbus A330-200, AUH = Abu Dhabi ]

The Networker however realises that the above timings are not possible and it should change in a manner similar to the following
UL531 CMB 0430 - 0735AUH0835- 1300 DME 357 332
UL532 DME 1500 - 2115AUH2215 - 0405+1 CMB 357 332

As per an exclusive comment by the airline to this website, the flight timings are subject to change hence the present schedule discrepancies.

The flights are scheduled to operate in timings similar to SriLankan's present morning Abu Dhabi flight ( UL211 A320 CMB ETD 0425; UL531 A330 CMB ETD 0430 ) and its partner Etihad's present Moscow flight ( EY69 A320 DME ETA 1315 ; UL532 A330 DME ETA 1400 ) - however it is not yet clear whether the airlines will replace the above flights with the new flight.

The flight provides very good connections to all of SriLankan's Indian sub-continent and Southeast Asia destinations, both ways.

( From an aviation enthusiast point of view, the airline sadly has used an old flight number ( ex ARN ) for this new rout, however nevertheless I am happy that they opted to launch the route with same frequency ( update: The route is now shown as thrice weekly ) as well as a similar routing to that I suggested ;-) )
