Skybrary - the safety wiki from Eurocontrol

So, I hear you say, wouldn't it be neat if there was one place with all the world's safety wisdom gathered on it, and where sensible people like you could go and add your bit, and there was all sorts of stuff explaining operational concepts that you one day meant to go and understand properly.

Indeed it might: so welcome to Skybrary, brought to you by Eurocontrol with considerable support from Flight Safety Foundation and ICAO. ("Skybrary" - damn I wish I'd thought of that - but Dr Christine Shea did instead.)

If you're a denizen of blogs then you're very likely familiar with the concept of wikis. If you're not then you probably still know about Wikipedia with all its strengths and weaknesses. That's the wiki to beat, but the underlying mechanism of the wiki can be used for any subject matter you like.

The great perceived weakness of Wikipedia is infamously that every loony, ignoramus, and downright devious schemer can go onto it and change items. And the great strength of it is that so can everyone else. Hopefully the latter category outweighs the first three.

Skybrary tries to get round the aforementioned weakness by screening contributors before they're allowed to run riot on the site. And it looks as if you really do get screened - at least lightly. You have to send them an email telling them who you are and what you do.

The inventors have high hopes for the whole thing, intending to be "the single point of reference" for safety matters within three years. Grand projet! Good luck.

I hope the screening's effective - otherwise Skybrary's could be like so many of the "Lie-braries" ...
