Sukhoi Superjet 100 flies

Sukhoi flew the Superjet 100 yesterday. Sales still slow, but at least it’s in the air. China and Japan not so far behind however. Despite the best efforts of Alenia and Snecma this programme is not progressing to market as quickly as it needs to. Looks nice though. Text of the press release below.

The all-new RussianSukhoi Superjet 100 flies successfully for the first time

May 19, 2008, Komsomolsk-on-Amur- The all-new Sukhoi Superjet 100 made a successful first flight today at Komsomolsk-on-Amur. Duringits 65 minute flight, the SSJ 100 took off, performed four circuits of theairfield at various altitudes, completed a box pattern and landed successfully.The mission profile, which was carried out in its entirety, included a climb to1,200 metres.  The Russian regional jet was crewed by AlexanderYablontsev, Chief Pilot of Sukhoi Civil Aircraft, with test pilot LeonidChikunov, both of which confirmed the high thrust-to-weight ratio and theproper operation of the engines and main systems.

“The Sukhoi Superjet 100 which has just completed itsfirst flight is a remarkable aircraft,” said Mikhail Pogosyan, Director Generalof Sukhoi Holding. “While much remains to be completed on the way tocertification, I am certain that we are well prepared for them and that theaircraft will enjoy the success it deserves.”

“To witness the Sukhoi Superjet 100 take to the airfor the first time makes today the most important day for all of us,” continuedPogosyan. “We have virtually beaten the air with our own wings.     The superjet 100 looks very nice.I like that part in the front which is like a brd’s beak.I will be waiting to welcome the Sukhoi Superjet’s maiden flight.
