WIWOL legacy - RAF Binbrook officers mess today

Binbrook mess thumb.JPG Bit of a personal obsession I know, but if you like Lightnings then you'll want to see this - although not in a good way. Old airfield buildings make the hairs on my neck stand up, and in some ways the sensation is more acute in places like messes than in operational buildings.

I took the chance to look in the windows at the officers mess at RAF Manby in the early 80s several years after had it closed. (When I was going out with the fair Karen from nearby Louth - hi Karen, you out there???) Nothing much had by then been moved. Imagine - one day you have a fully functioning mess with officers eating, sleeping and of course drinking - the next there's just furniture and no people for evermore.

I'm not sure I'd want to set foot in the Binbrook mess as pictured though, just too far gone. And I suppose Binbrook was the one place where you'd never hear WIWOL because of course everybody actually WOL. Imagine trying to explain WIWOL to the people who did what they did to that building.

More Lightning pain available here.

I knew the Mess in all it's Glory back in 1988-89. I as was one of the Last RAF Service Stewards to leave Binbrook when it closed. A memory I have kept through out my RAF Career.

Really frightening sure ther are lots of natural threats that we are not able to control.
