How France supports its helicopter industry, part 2

So, on to Hyeres and the navy. We're promised two CN235 flights during the tour and one C-130H. I'm absolutely gutted that what is probably my last chance to fly in a C-160 Transall is not going to happen. There's even one on the tarmac at Hyeres when we arrive to taunt me.

But meanwhile we're in the CN235, which is at least a new type for me.
Here it is in all its elegance at Villacoublay.

And then we're airborne. No chance of an upgrade I suppose??? Thought not.

At Hyeres there's some good tech stuff on the upgrade of the Panthers which are currently trying to repeat with Somali pirates the success they've had harassing drug-runners in the Caribbean. Among other things they are getting a major cockpit upgrade which will take the type from this...

...to this...

The navy have their own scary guys and show off their skills at intercepting bad guys in boats.

We say au revoir to the navy and join the army and air force at Le Luc, in the same part of the world.

Early on we get a demo of how the French, who have done roughly this sort of operation, would set about rescuing hostages.

A Gazelle does the spotting.

And guides in the Caracal which appears at short notice...

...and then drops yet more tough guys in on the terrorists...

While a Tiger keeps a discreet watch to lend a heavier hand if required. Frankly it's all pretty impressive. The noise of three helicopters in close proximity has a remarkable pyschological effect apart from the actual weaponry.

And it looks as if I'm going to need a part 3, which I haven't written yet. Bear with me,
