The MD-83 is the heaviest of the MD-80 Series with a MTOW 9071kg’s above that of the -81, and is primarily designed for longer routes. The maximum payload of the -83 is 1000kg’s heavier than the -81, and it can carry it some 1667km further, but at the expense of a 20% reduction in hold volume compared to the -81, due additional fuel tankage of 4297 litres. Two hundred and fifty six -83s were produced; the first being delivered to Finnair on 26/6/1985 and the final delivery took place on 29/12/1999 to TWA who ordered thirty two aircraft. Two hundred and forty seven -83s were in service in August 2005
