Agusta's main activity is the research, development, planning, production, maintenance and marketing of helicopters as well as all associated equipment, components and structural parts. It is also involved in the design and construction of computer and onboard systems software, customer support, technical assistance, spares upgrading, training and overhaul.
The company makes the A109C, A109K, A109 Power, A119 Koala, A129 International, A129 Mangusta, A139 Utility, Agusta-Bell 412HP and Griffon Helicopters. In 2001 Agusta merged with GKN Westland as AgustaWestland Helicopters. Agusta and Westland already have a joint company called EH Industries, formed to manage and market the joint EH-101 helicopter programme.
Agusta's interest in helicopters started in 1952 with the signing of a an agreement with Bell to produce its helicopters under licence. Similar agreements were signed in the 1960s with Sikorsky and Boeing. Agusta then began to produce helicopters in its own right, one of its first being the A109.
The A129 Mangusta helicopter gunship, which made its first appearance in 1983, was the first such helicopter to be designed and produced wholly in Europe.
In 1998 Agusta and Bell Helicopter created a joint venture company, Bell/Agusta Aerospace, to develop the AB139 helicopter and the BA609 Tiltrotor.
