Dassault Aviation

Dassault is an industrial group with varied activities covering several areas of high technology, including Aeronautics and Space, Data Processing, Electronics/Communications as well as interests in real estate and insurance. Dassault Aviation is responsible for the design, development, production, sales, and support of military aircraft such as the Rafale, Mirage 2000, Atlantique II and Alpha Jet. The company also manufactures the Falcon range of business jets.

In April 1945, under Marcel Dassault's stewardship, the company designed a twin-engined short haul transport aircraft, the MD-315 Flamant

France's post-war aircraft industry enjoyed its first export success with the MD-450 Ouragan, a fighter design which was supplied to India and Israel and which was a forerunner of the Mystère-Etendard family. The Mystère II was the first European aircraft to break the sound barrier. This led to the Mirage F-1, which equipped eleven national air forces world-wide.

In 1963, the twin-engine business jet, the Mystère 20, led the roll out of the Mystère-Falcon family. Pan Am placed the first orders for production series aircraft, thus opening the door to the American market. This aircraft served as the basis for a smaller model, the twin engined Falcon 10, as well as a larger one, the three engined Falcon 50, which is suitable for transatlantic flights.

Commercial transportation is also an area in which the company has been active. It has participated in programmes for Concorde, Galion (which became the Airbus 300), and Mercure, a short or medium haul seat 150 passenger aircraft which was operated by Air Inter.

In 1969, the company restructured and merged with Breguet Aviation to become Avions Marcel Dassault - Breguet Aviation (AMD-BA). Serge Dassault became Chairman and CEO of the company in 1986, and in 1990 Avions Marcel Dassault - Breguet Aviation was renamed Dassault Aviation.
