Wizz Air
Hungary based Wizz Air is Central and Eastern Europe's largest low cost airline, operating low cost scheduled services from hubs in Bulgaria, Croatia, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Serbia and Slovenia with points in the Mediterranean, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Macedonia, Netherlands, Scandinavia, Turkey and the UK.
History
Founded in Katowice, Poland in September 2003 by former Malév CEO Jozsef Varadi as a privately-owned low cost carrier. Launched services from its operating base at Katowice in May 2004.
Reorganised on 4 September 2004 as a subsidiary of London-registered Wizz Air Ltd.
An investor group led by Indigo Partners LLC, founders of Singapore-based low cost carrier Tiger Airways, became the largest shareholder in December 2004.
Opened a second operating base in Budapest in June 2005.
Establsihed new Polish operating bases in, Warsaw and Gdansk, before the end of 2005. Establised a new subsidiary, WIZZ Air Bulgaria in Sofia in December 2005.
Established a second subsidiary carrier, WIZZ Air Ukraine, at Kiev Borispol in July 2008.
The tenth operating base (and third in Romania) was Timosoara, opened in February 2009.
Established operating bases in April 2011 in Belgrade, Serbia and Vilnius, Lithuania.
Re-absorbed subsidiary WIZZ Air Bulgaria in the summer of 2011, continuing to operate all flights from Sofia.
