Indonesia's largest airline by passenger volume, Lion Air is a privately-owned low-cost carrier, serving a domestic network from its Jakarta primary base and a new secondary hub at Batam.
Lion Air also operates international services to destinations in Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Singapore and Vietnam. New international services from both hubs to destinations in China, India, Saudi Arabia and Thailand are planned from 2015.
Lion Air launched scheduled passenger services between Jakarta and Pontianak using a leased Boeing 737-200.
The airline became the launch customer for the Boeing 737-900ER in July 2005, going on to become the world's largest customer for the type, with commitments for over 130 aircraft for delivery by 2017.
Lion Air announced a planned initial public offering, from which it intended to raise over $1 billion in February 2011.
On 6 June 2011, Lion Air announced plans to acquire 49% of Berjaya Air, before the end of the year, as part of a plan to turn the Malaysian carrier into Lion Air's Malaysian low cost carrier subsidiary.
