Principal Engineer (Electronics Design)/Technical Lead - Stevenage
Extremely well respected in the Defence industry our client is a world-leading missile and missile systems manufacturer with operations in France, Germany, Italy and Britain, over 10,000 employees and an annual turnover of over €3 bn.
Formed following a merger of the 3 main missile producers in Europe our client has benefited the combined experience gained from fifty years of technological and operational success.
ROLE PURPOSE:Either Lead the design and Project Management activities for a small area of the Business or specific project subsystem/sub-assembly including the Day to day control of assigned EE staff or design/develop complex electronics circuits/subassemblies. (The role will provide opportunities for the candidate to develop into team leadership of multi-disciplinary teams (sometimes Multi-national), including manufacturing and test, delivering tasks and equipment to demanding project timescales.)
Business Delivery
"Propose, design, develop and manufacture applicable subsystem(s). Deliver the designs in accordance to specification, time and cost objectives.
"Develop and maintain the work plans and report progress as required.
"Load and manage relevant work into other Operations/T&E functions.
"Workload and resource matching
"Assign & lead the necessary people resources to achieve the planned workload.
"Track the workload for the team and negotiate/implement priorities, as necessary.
Candidate will be required to continuously improve the performance and contribution of the team for both Project and Functional activities. Identify and Manage local improvement plans for the team.
Where applicable to the needs of the task, or as part of functional development activities, develop areas of co-ordination and co-operation with other functions of company and the equivalent electronics team in France and Italy.

"Local Risk Process implemented. Risks regularly reviewed and aversion strategies put in place and delivered.
"Monthly reports produced detailing progress, successes and issues (with explanations of what is being done to address the issues). Items to be escalated for higher management attention must also be identified.
"Regular Team Reviews held to assess progress and reset priorities or re-deploy resources, as necessary, to address issues.
"Resources balanced to workload. Mechanisms in place to identify and negotiate staff workload and resource shortages.
"Tasks delegated to EE staff and other functions in accordance with company processes.
"Improvement actions/opportunities identified and implemented and benefits assessed.
"121's and staff development activities achieved.

Principal Engineer
"Tasks achieved to time, budget and specification.

Extensive experience in one or more of the following technical domains are required:-
"Design of Digital Electronics including Microprocessor (e.g Power PC)
"Design of Analogue Electronics (up to and including RF)
"Design of Power Electronics (e.g. Actuator drive circuitry)
"Derivation of sub-system architectures from system requirement inputs
"PCB Packaging and layout of complex PCB's

Related competence in one or more of the following:-
"The use of CAE Design tools (Xilinx EDK, Mentor Graphics HDL Designer, Leonardo Spectrum, Precision Synthesis, ModelSim, Board Architect, Board Station RE).
"Negotiation of subsystem requirements with the systems teams
"Writing Subsystem Requirement and associated documents
"Ability to provide succinct and accurate reports and presentations

"Ability to interface and influence at different levels of the organisation
"Ability to organise and plan own tasks to meet higher level demands

ECONOMICS
"Ownership of complete packages of work, both design and manufacturing activities (Team Leader).
"Day to day direction and funding of a team of Electronic Designers. (Team Leader).
"If the role is design only then no budgets are allocated other than for the specific design task.

PROBLEM SOLVING CHALLENGES
"Maintain and develop effective interface to customers
"Workload planning, risk management and aversion to maintain progress to plan and budget.
"Developing a coherent team capable of maximising output from available funding
"Continuous Identification and implementation of improvement opportunities to reduce programme costs.
