We have a commitment to the professional development of our personnel, and offer an attractive salary + benefits package in-keeping with our position as market-leading solutions provider.
Work package Overview:
The section uses various models and software packages to analyse the effects that space environments (e.g. plasmas, charged-particle radiation, micrometeoroids/ space debris, atomic oxygen, geomagnetism) may have on ESA missions. Senior level analysis support (PhD or equivalent experience) is required to fulfill the tasks.
The activities to be covered by the support are listed below:
* The task will primarily support ESA programmes by application of the models and analysis tools for assessment of effects of the space environments (plasmas, energetic particle radiation, atmospheres, microparticles, contamination, etc.).
* The tasks will include development, adaptation, maintenance, use and interpretation of the various models and tools and software development of associated graphical and other utilities, including WWW applications.
* In some cases, in-orbit measurements of environmental parameters (plasmas, energetic particles, microparticles,) may be used to develop models of these environments for use in future mission planning. The tasks will contribute to the analysis of some of these data, derive relevant parameters to compare with existing models for validation, and ultimately lead to improvement of the models.
* The priority function will be to support ESA mission development through analysis of spacecraft-plasma interactions with available tools including complex methods (e.g. SPIS), simple methods (e.g. analytical methods), and "heritage" tools.
The task may also include use of the GEANT-4 radiation transport toolkit to specific space problems. Microparticle environments might also be analysed with ESABASE/Debris. Atmospheric environments are studied with the European Martian Climate Database and GCM.
* Expected missions to be supported include operating or completed missions (e.g. Cluster, Rosetta, SMART-1), and preparation for future missions (LISA Pathfinder, SWARM, BepiColombo, , LISA, Aurora, Cross-Scale, MMS, Solar Probe, etc).
* Contributions to the preparation of ECSS engineering standards where necessary (e.g. ECSS-E-10-04, ECSS-E-20-06, etc.).
* Reviews of contractor documents in this domain and in areas where environmental effects may have an impact shall be undertaken.
* Support the section's technology research and development contracts in the above areas, including direct interfaces with the contractors, participation in progress meetings and reviews, as requested, and provision of appropriate feed-back on the progress and discussions.
When supporting projects, interfacing will include communication with the project contractor companies or partner organizations, participation in progress meetings and reviews, as requested by project work, and provision of appropriate feedback on the achieved progress and discussions.
As part of the tasks, authoritative, high-quality reporting on analyses shall be undertaken. Presentations to project staff shall be undertaken. Good quality control of analyses is essential. Development work shall be fully documented. In some cases contributions to scientific and technical papers will be made.
Specific qualification requirements:
* An advanced degree in physics or a space-related technical subject, along with good computing ability, or equivalent experience;
* Specific knowledge of the interactions of the plasma and radiation environments in space with spacecraft, along with the computational methods used to evaluate the interactions;
* Experience with modern scientific programming languages, operating systems and tools, and experience with software and system maintenance;
* Very good verbal and written communication skills are required.
